Well, after 4 surgeries this year and 3 failed attempts growing this year I am ready to get started again. Am all healed up and have the energy now to attempt using my Gro and Flo (ebb & flow) 6 plant system.
Cloning machine 20 clones.

Needed only 6 so the rest will go to my buddy for his grow.

On my earlier attempts this year I was not able to get the root system established. In an attempt to get control of my pH I added a Torus Hydro Automated pH Regulator to the system but that requires some roots for the ionic exchange to occur, which I did not realize in my earlier grows. The guy that recommended the regulator informed me that it needed a rooting system to work well. Now that I have some root system I have a bit of control over the pH, have only had to add pH down a couple of times. In a week or so I should have enough roots for ion production to start so the Torus regulator should begin working and my pH should stabilize @ 5.8 to 6.3. My EC is 0.8.

Earlier this year when I was trying to get the root system to establish a friend, @rkymtnman, recommended doing a "waterfall" to help get the root system going. Traditionally in this type of system the solution is pumped from the rez to the control bucket and as the control bucket fills it fills the grow buckets equally.
Instead of filling from the bottom I am using Rainbird full circle spray emitters and filling, via "Waterfall", the control bucket in reverse. This allows the roots to have aerated solution flow over the roots before the buckets are full, and then sit in the aerated solution till the buckets empty at the end of each cycle.
The Rainbird emitters.

Applying the nutrient solution from the top takes about 20 minutes to fill the control bucket in reverse. Then the roots sit in the solution for about 25 minutes before it is pumped back to the rez. At present I am running 16 cycles at 45 minutes on and 45 minutes off.
I am in adjustment mode now, setting the depth of the solution in the grow buckets, the solution level is a bit higher than I want or need.
You can see the depth of the solution in the grow buckets, right at the surface of the Hydroton when buckets are filled. To reduce the chances of getting algae and other bad stuff I lowered the solution depth about 2 plus inches below the Hydroton so as not to expose the liquid to the light. That will still submerge the roots in solution.
Level of the solution in the buckets prior to adjustment.

Once the roots are established I will remove the Rainbird emitters and hook the system back up and use the traditional rez to control bucket to grow buckets as designed. Will also adjust the timing of filling and draining.

This is a pic of the root system in the Gro & Flo in September of 22'. Things were going well and then on the 14th I had a heart attack. After spending just over a week in the hospital and a few days with friends that were near the hospital I came home to an empty reservoir and 6 dead plants. They had been switched to 12/12 just 18 days before they were growing like gangbusters and drinking over two gallons a day. Since I had been feeling very bad and not really paying attention to the plants it had been over 6 days since I had replenished the 30 gallon reservoir. So I lost my third grow for the year, hope my bad luck spell is over.
Plant at 16 days into flower and the root system.

Feel free to join in, suggestions and comments are always welcome. Would really like help from some of you that have grown with this method before.

I cant say for certain, but think any nute solution sprayed on the leaves will be harmful. I haven't personally tested, but have seen other threads on here where nutes on the foliage caused issues. Maybe others will chime in.

Let us know how it goes.

Oh, and glad you are recovering from the heart attack.

Thanks, I consider it like misting your plants with nute solution.

And these are the rest of the ladies! There is no damage noted.

Been having issues with my pH meters. I have 3 units, Milwaukee MW 102, HM Digital pH 80 and the Apera pH 20.
I am waiting for some calibration solution for the MW 102. The other two units I calibrated each successfully but when I used both to check my nutrient solution in the rez I got a reading of 6.1 on the Apera pH 20 and reading of 6.9 on the HM pH 20. I decided to recalibrate the two units and the pH 20 calibrated successfully but the pH 80 calibrated to the 7.0 but the 4.0 gave me an Err message.
I will be going into the city tomorrow so will stop by the Hydro shop and pick up some new bottles of pH solution and recalibrate them and see what I get.

Anyway after calibrating the Apera pH I tested my solution and it again read 6.1 so I am going with the meter for now.

One thing I’ve found helpful is to keep ph strips or drops on hand for when meters fail. I need to replace the probe on my apera and that’s gotta wait till payday but meanwhile I know my res is somewhere between 5.5 and 6.0 and my plants are happy.

Here are the ladies today, four days since last pics. They are beginning to take off, thinking the roots are starting to grow.
Here is the one I questioned on Monday, think I will top this plant as the under growth shows nothing like the apex growth.

The remainder of the ladies.

Backing off start times, going to go to 8 - 45 minute run times with 2.15 minute drain and rest times.

@Mr. Mohaskey,

Just to be safe I have lowered the spray emitters so there is no spray on the plants anymore.
Hopefully by this time next week I will be removing the spray emitters and go back to regular Ebb and Flow. Although I do like using the emitters as I think that the spray creates more oxygen to the root system. @rkymtnman do you have any thoughts on increased oxygen production using the waterfall method?

i think the top spray as it works it way down the hydroton creates a lot of DO.

I’ve thought about doing ebb & flow a bunch, how’s it compare in quality and yield compared to dwc?
I am not sure how they compare, I am new to this type of grow. Have tried a couple of times this year, but have had health issues (4 surgeries this year) and not been successful.
From what I have read the yields are better than DWC, not sure about quality.

Next round you could always put a cut off plastic cup, sunk a bit around the base of the plant deflecting spray so it keeps the bottom of the stock dry. That root picknlooks great. I can’t see any harm filling from the top. As your thinking more 02 with the top watering.

Thanks, good idea on the plastic cup.
That root pic was from my last attempt prior to my heart attack. About a week after that pic was taken I had a massive pH issue which caused a zinc lock out, it think, that cause the plants to whiten, stop growth and so I did the chop and got nothing from that grow.
Hopefully I have gotten past that now, my pH is very stable now and my EC is well within my bounds.

I run a similar bucket system, for about 5 years now. During veg I only flood 4 times during lights on, and no floods during lights out until they are much bigger, maybe after 3rd week of veg?
There is very little transportation happening in the dark, and I feel like it gets roots stretching and looking for water.
Once in flower you can flood more often, but flooding 6-8 times in 24 hrs is more than enough.
My other suggestion would be, once the roots are taking off, I would raise those buckets so they don't flood too deep and keep the top hydroton wet.
Lastly I would cover the hydroton with panda film or get lids to fit the baskets.
With 6 plants in that tent your humidity will be off the charts.

@Cabrone,
How do you start your plants, seeds or clones and which ever method you use how do you start them.
I would like to use seed and find a pheno I like and clone it.

I am using the Torus XpH Capsule Model pH stabilizer.
"The XpH Capsule Model is a revolutionary pH stabilizer that automatically regulates the pH of your hydroponics system or reservoir, keeping it in the ideal range for optimal nutrient absorption."
"PH maintenance is an essential factor in any hydroponics setup. Without the plants being naturally rooted in the ground, excess ions build up in the system, creating a toxic environment for the plants. The Automated pH Regulator solves this by removing this charged ion build up, creating the perfect pH environment for your plants."
"In order for your plant’s roots to uptake the nutrients essential for growth, a slightly acidic pH range is required. When the the pH travels outside of this zone you will experience “nutrient lockout” where the plants do not absorb the nutrients properly, stunting the plants growth and disrupting their immune systems."

I began using this during my failed grows earlier this year, but never got the pH to stabilize before my grows failed. The grows did not fail do to pH but I did have to constantly add pH down due to fluctuations. I contacted the friend who recommended this product and told him I was having to constantly adjust the pH and told me it was the same for him until his plants established a root system. He said that now he only has to adjust the pH for a day or so and then he does nothing at all between rez changes. I have added 6 gallons to replenish the solution the plants have drank and during both additions I have not had to add any pH solutions.
Now that I know what I need to do the system is working great, I had to adjust the pH twice during root establishment but now I have not had to add either pH up or down at all for weeks. Even though my plants are very young they were clones so there was a fairly good root system when I put the in the Gro & Flo system.
I will be changing the rez out early next week so will see if I need to make any adjustment with a new rez.

I would like to use seed and find a pheno I like and clone it.
I start my seeds in promix. Once I can determine sex, and I can see the plant structure, it is big enough to cut enough clones and root them in an aero cloner(clone king). Once they root and start growing in the cloner, usually 2-3 weeks soak the hydroton, then carefully transplant to the baskets. Depending on root structure and depth you may or may not have to hand water for a few days until the roots get established.
