would cops make up a burglar story just to knock on my door

hey all maybe im just paranoid but the local police rang my door bell just now and said that there was burglary and the lady up the street got robbed. he just asked me if i seen anything unusual and he asked my name and date of birth and if anyone else was home today my sister came to the door said she didnt see anything and he left he never asked to come inside or anything the whole situation was maybe a minute or two I'm a little worried . my main concern is that they just wanted to knock on the door to try to catch me off guard or something there were two small bags of weed on the table and we had smoked the bong about a hour or 2 before so it prob smelled. idk what do you guys think what should i make of this? am i just paranoid?

Police can and do lie to you, and the practice has been condoned by the U.S. Supreme Court, so always be wary.

Nevertheless, what you describe sounds fairly innocent: there likely was a burglary up the street and they likely were just asking about that. That's not to say, though, that they won't remember seeing the weed on the table/smelling the smoke in the air still. Unless you've got a grow going, a lot of herb (enough to constitute intent to distribute in your state/city), etc., you're probably fine. Police usually have better things to do than bust the simple stoner hitting a bong at home.

i wouldnt worry about it, i would be happy about having cops thorough enough to ask the neighbors. i live in a nice neighborhood, in a nice suburban city, and when my dirtbike was stolen out of my garage 2 years ago the cop basically blamed me and kept asking if i was sure i hadnt left it somewhere. he suggested to me that i ask my neighbors. i know it makes you totally paranoid, but you have to get that crap out of your head, and they probably could care less if you are smoking in your house, at least here in ohio thats how it is

this is bad advice...cops arent stupid...not going to the door just makes u look funny....the rule is never let them in..."oh hey care if we step inside n ask u a few questions?"...."no harm we're nice cops".....ur reply..."no"....and step outside with them n close ur door behind u........this is how u play it

LOL WTF? Tell them to get lost! Police cannot, are not suppose to randomly knock on doors and ask for ID. It's possible a crime was committed nearby at a home which may of lead detectives to ask uniformed police to knock on a few neighbors doors to ask if they saw anything, but I would have no idea why they would ask you for your name and DOB and if anyone else was in your home unless they were trying to verify who YOU were, so yes, sounds suspicious. I once had a homicide detective come to a 4-plex I lived in because there was a murder on my block and all he asked was my first name and if I heard gunshots or saw anything or knew the deceased from a description he gave me. A murder case and he didn't even ask for ID, last name, DOB or if anyone else lived there. That would make me paranoid to.

Diff cops do diff things....some ask for id some dont....just like u do ur job diff than the next guy same w them....never...I repeat never tell the cops to get lost!!!...esp w a grow inside....are u kidding me....thats def asking for unwanted negative attention....trust me no one hates cops more than me...they took away 4 years of my life so trust me my feelings run deep....real deep....if ur growing u better play the nice guy n play their game however they wanna play it.....

absolutely not true he gave great advice just dont answer the door next time...let me tell ya something if they are knocking it means they dont have shit for a reason to knock the door down yet..answering and letting them smell and see the herb on the table just gave them cause for a search warrant..only reason i think your fine is because he could have walked right in had he seen or smelled herb and you would already have gotten nailed..but are you growing?? if you are you shouldnt have answered and finished your grow and called it a day..since you answered idk man depending how many and your local laws you decide if its worth the risk..if you arent why are you even posting this right now!! he would have walked right on in not come back tomorrow for a possesion charge!!

Yes, seems suspicious to me. Did you ask anything? What type of crime was committed, who got robbed, where? I just don't see police coming to any home asking these things unless they are suspicious of you for something or someone suggested they knock at your door because you might know something. If the house robbed was right next door I can understand and would not be paranoid, but if you don't even know if what the cops were saying is true, if a crime nearby actually even happened, then ya that would make me paranoid. But if you are just a small grow, under or around 1,000 watts don't worry. That smell could of got them to enter the home, so next time do what thatboy said and go outside and shut the door behind you. he must of watched Barry's video to.

haha worst advice of all accept for not to tell them to get lost because you should just ignore them (although that ship sailed) or depending on your house layout come out the back door if its not weird..you play their game their way and you go to jail, you gotta play their game YOUR way. know your rights!!!

I agree with you to, more so. If the police don't know you are home don't answer. The police cannot kick a door in unless they have a warrant or see an actual crime committed. Ever watch The First 48? Many of times cops have pounded on doors because the address is somehow connected to the person of interest, and never were they able to kick in a door without that warrant.
