Bridgelux EB Series Build

Been real busy with work, minor update got the two Far Red XP-E x6 PCB's mounted and powered. Been working on enclosures for light wiring & controller + sensors. Was having trouble getting RTC running on ESP8266 for lighting scheduling, so I broke down and bought 2 way Outlet timer. Got a very basic webserver running and reporting temps, working on getting these logged.

How hard can they be run without heatsink at all?

Thinking about screwing the ends of the bars to pieces of wood.

I would not screw them directly to wood. Would it be fine? Probably. Would I be thinking about it all the time, Yes...

It appears that at the recommended drive the don't need heat sinks, but at the max they do. With that being said, i would still mount them to aluminum strips. Maybe something like this...

providing heat sinks when you don't need them is better then not providing them when you do.

So I am looking at the 560s.

I would like to run 4 5000k and 2 5700k. This will simply for vegging.

This will run $100 by the time I pay $40 shipping.

So will the HLG-185-1050B have enough power to do so?

$100 if I add another driver for free shipping.

I think my math is right but I am not 100%

Of course I need to spend another $20 at mouser to get free shipping so Ill grab a driver to run some xml2s in far red when I get around to ordering them.

Heatsinks most likely $40

So $240 and I will have a driver to run XML 2 Far reds if I ever order them.

so 6 - 560s is 138 volts (23 volts each), and a hlg-185-1050b puts out 190v so you could run up to 8 - 560s

Dont think you can get eb strips from arrow/verical...but it might be worth checking out the 28cm(x2) or 56cm strips from samsung. The m series is pretty cheap although it doesnt come in 5700k.

The free shipping is pretty awesome, have dealt with verical before and they are very speedy.

I dunno they don't need heatsinking at 700ma but I think wood reduces thermal performance wouldn't it? Trap excess heat?

There's gotta be a better cheap option.

If you were going to use wood maybe you should see if you need cut slots where the LEDs run down the tracks so at least the heat can radiate more freely off the back of the strips.

Or maybe run thin woods strips perpendicular on a solid frame so most of the LED strips aren't covered.

Wood is just meant as a replacement for aluminium angles.
Most of the EB will out in open air.

Have any of you guys used optics for the strips? I recently grabbed some of the 280mm Samsungs and the only optics I could find without a huge MOQ were these F14304_FLORENCE-1R-Z90 from Arrow. Mouser had them too but they were 2 bucks more a pop. I've been planning on running the strips soft at 350ma and wonder if the lenses will help or hurt at that low of an amperage.

The M series uses the LM561B+ and EB are virtually the same lm/watt.

As an aside I replaced all my old T-12 lights in my garage with M series C strips at 4K. 8 double T-12 fixtures with just 8 Samsung strips...5300 lm each. ONE samsung strip so out performs two new T-12s bulbs.

How much does it outperform? Well, at my work bench before upgrading it was 80 LUX, and after it averaged 350 LUX. And instead of burning 2 each 32 watt T-12s, I now burn one 33 watt LED strip per fixture!

I know this is a EB thread, but I have both the M series C and the EB in 4000K and they are very comparable. Just saying.

I was hoping to but never got answers back.....They have a zhaga rating which I haven't checked with Samsung...But if they both follow the same zhaga mount....Should work fine......

Have you used lenses before? They seem to work best in open areas with no walls....Lowering usually just narrows the beam....And in most cases will intensify within the beam pattern.....:peace:

If you have a router you could cut channels into the wood and slide the strip in.

Or you could glue strip together to make channels.

Thanks Abiqua. While this site was down I grabbed the lenses and clips and they aren't compatible. I didn't even think about the poke-in connections they have but those are what stops it from fitting on the strips. I took my Dremel to one of the lenses as a test and it ain't worth it.

Yes. I took an old T8 4 bulb fixture and Kapton taped 4 strips in place of the bulbs. Works great. Strips very cool. The fixture makes a good heat sink. Just .5% Vf droop running for hours. So about 20k lumens for about 120 watts and only $60 for the strips.

man that sucks ....my apologies for representing them poorly....they are so new...sucks they didnt work. I am going to try and send a new round of emails and pm mark from cutter..cant quite remember the tag apparently....sucks the dremel didnt work either, that would have been the way i went too.....:peace:
