BTT 2nd Grow Bagseed Soil

Time to start a grow journal.

Grow closet 4.5'x1.8'x9'
600W HPS digital ballast
Cooltube hood
130cfm can fan
4" Carbon Scrubber
Mylar
Bagseed
FF Happy Frog w/perlite
Advanced Nutrients Grow,Micro,Bloom,Big Bud

Germed around 50 seeds.. Around 40 opened up and were planted in soil. Some didn't sprout, 2 or 3 died after sprouting..

So I'm down to 27 seedlings..

Having some issues with overwatering/soil holding too much water. I mixed in perlite, but obviously not enough...

Lights are 18/6. Seed sprouted around 5/6 so they are just over a week old now, 9 days...

Plan on transplanting next week to bigger pots and with a better mix of soil and perlite...

Having trouble with some of the seedlings. Cotyledons are turning yellow, and some have some brown going on..Not sure if this is due to the overwater/ oxygen def.

pH water and runoff around 6.7~6.8

Can't be a nute def, they are only 9 days old in FF Happy Frog soil...

Any ideas?? Can't seem to figure out what it is..

Temps are from 73* at night to a max of 88* during the day. Usually around 80-82* at plant level throughout the day..

Hmm... After looking at other threads my plants seem to be growing a lot slower than others.. Must be due to the overwatering.. Damn soil retaining to much water.. There is plenty of drainage, just need more perlite so the roots can get some oxygen. Transplant will take place soon!

Upon returning from work some have picked there limbs back up in an attempt to reach for the sun.. Now if only the rest would follow suit..

Here we are 4 days later. They are all about 2 weeks today. There is def. an overwater problem, and possbile nute burn/lockout from pH fluctuation. I watered heavy yesterday with 6.1pH water. Runoff 6.5~ Now just going to leave them be for the next week or so.. Some have gotten worse, others are ok.. Kinda frustrated already, they should be twice the size they are.

I think combination of not enough perlite, packing the soil when filling the cups, nute lockout due to high pH has stunted my plants.. I decided to germ 10 more seeds, and replace the worst looking ones with the new ones when they sprout..

Humidity is up to 45-55% lights on.

You'll notice some have a lot of perlite in them. Stupid me was trying to raise them closer to the light when the light was off (ie doing it in the dark) and knocked over about 12-13 of them.. I was PISSED! So i decided i would put them in a new mix of soil with a LOT more perlite. Roots looked good. Didn't take any pics as I wanted to get them back in soil ASAP!

So what do you say? Nute burn? Lockout?

It's funny cuz I didn't run into many problems with my first grow using MG organic soil, no veg nutes, and CFL's.. Only prob I did have was not enough perlite which I made the same mistake again with my new grow.. That and the plants growing into the CFL's.. LOL

But on my new grow I go all out, 600w HPS, Mylar, Good Ventilation, carbon filter, FF soil and they won't grow for shit lol..

Oh well, it takes time..

Ill try to take some pics of the new seedlings away from the HPS so you can see it's true colors. Was just being lazy..

DId u ever figure the problem out? I have the same exact thing, seedling are slow...and look curled down like yours with the yellow on the leaves as well...they are looking worse every day....

hey man I think 6.7 is a little high for the runoff. Try superthrive! It lowers pH and if your runoff is 6.7 it will definitely bring it down around 6.4 maybe lower.

Yes. Will post pics in a few.. Going to up them to 1.1qt pots now... Gonna take a look at the roots and post pics of them too..

i looked at one of mine and the roots were pretty dark and not too developed, small root ball but nothing huge on the outside of my cups. going to transplant mine into some FFOF tonight in a bigger pot and see if that helps a bit. I think it might be that my seedling starter soil retains too much water and causes oxygen problems.

Ok, I just perused through previous tips/comments, so I may be repeating.. You pegged the overwatering, but 88°F is too hot for seedlings.. Also, how high above is the light?? You're using HPS now (and alot of it for your area), you can't underestimate that photon power regardless of temperatures.. Too much 'light can be bad itself, especially on little guys.. On the same note, I can't imagine 130cfm being sufficient for that.. Especially when the light is so low, and your ducting so curved upwards.. That will take the cfm down a chunk.. I am a bit confused as to whether or not the cool-tube fan is the only means of exhaust.. You should have one dedicated to lights, and one for the growroom when cool-tubing, and that doesn't even address circulating fans..
To combat these issues until you can correct them properly you should jack the humidity waay up.. Perhaps hang a white towel into a water bucket to facilitate alot of evaporation with your excess heat..
Another point, don't be so ghetto with the mylar.. What you've done will create serious hotspots equivalent to frying a bug with a magnifying glass.. Your best bet is to get some cardboard, kiddy paste (I actually use a homemade starch paste so I can get it really thin/runny whick makes it easier to smooth out), duct tape, and something to smooth/iron out wrinkles.. Turn the cardboard into mylar mirrors, then duct-tape the edges.. Then they're quality, and easy to handle too..
Ya know, if you still got your cfl's you might wanna swap them in for a bit while you work stuff out.. Little veggers love cfl's..

i have mine under 6 23w daylight cfls and same problem, thinking its a soil/watering prob.

Word of advice, get some incandescents (or atleast cfl's) to illuminate for pictures.. HPS sucks as a light source for analyzing things.. I couldn't see the browning you spoke of, I just believed it was there, shrouded by HPS..
Oh, and what is the pH pf your input water, AND runoff water??

Ok, So i got a lot done today. Looks like most are rootbound when transplanting.. I find that odd being they are only 15days from sprout.. I put the best ones in the 1.1qt pots with a LOT more perlite in the soil. Hopefully this will help with the soil holding too much water.. I left the worst ones the way they were. Didn't kill any just gonna let them do there thing and see what happens.

Took down the carbon filter for now to see if it changes anything. So air is now being sucked right at the hood.

Light was app. ~10" from the tops. Prolly a little too close. Whoops. Move the light up to about ~18-19" from the top of the plants.

ppm of the tap water is 174. Run off was 215-245 on the ones I DIDN'T transplant. (still in the red cups)

Runoff on the transplanted ones was 360ppm.

Watered after transplant with a pH of 6.5. Runoff was 6.7

Also put 2 in 100% perlite (Hempy Bucket) just for fun!
