Fems own Regs - the best out of 200 female genotypes

Started on a mission in 2008 to test a bunch of different flavors to find out how much variety cannabis can really dish out. Finally got through 200 different ladies and these are the top 5% or top 10 that came from seed. These 10 have very strong but unique smell/flavor, great potency and at least decent yield.

IMG_0049a Ace of Spades.jpg TGA - Ace of Spades (reg)

IMG_9544a PC4.jpg Cali Connection - Purple Chem (fem)

DSC08490a SQ2.jpg Sour Queen (TGA Qleaner X Reservoir SSSDH Shire cut) (fem)

That is somewhat useful info, but the really important thing showed up when I looked at how many keepers came from fems, how many from regs and how many from cuts I was passed (not necessarily elite cuts):

out of 91 females that came from regs: 5 standouts (5.5%)
out of 94 females that came from fems: 14 standouts (15%)
out of 10 females from passed cuts: 1 standout (10%)

Based on that so far I am 6 times more likely to find a standout lady from a fem bean than from a regular bean. So if I ever had to start all over, I would grab fem packs of Cali Connection, Sin City and TH Seeds and probably save myself years of work.

The whole list that were empirically tested. Some were whole packs, some were singles:

The same thing goes when I look at the runner-ups, the cuts that were hard to decide between, the vast majority of them came from fem beans.

Out of 195 ladies, there were 4 extreme hermies. They broke out with balls all over the plant in flowering but I was determined the get them to the finish so I plucked off every single ball and banana and the smoke turned out fine.

Delicious Seeds - Cotton Candy fem
G13 Labs - Pineapple Express fem
TH Seeds - MKage fem
TGA - Agent Orange reg

The honor of the very worst lady out of 195 goes to Paradise - Wappa. Not a judgement against Paradise, it was just 1 bean but it is worth a laugh, the .5 percentile

I have a blue dream fem, and a strawberry Amnesia fem I have cloned. Great stuff. If I was going to fem I would do the best female. And I plan too next run. Whoever femef the blue dream it is great. Smells like blueberry muffins. I've had great luck with fems.

I appreciate all the hard work and time it must have taken to run and compile this list. But I can't help but notice that you really only stuck to 4-5 breeders.
Saying that fems are better is a blanket statement and might just mean that fems are better from these breeders. Plus some breeders don't even sell fems so how could you compare them.
Like Tga for instance.
Of course your more likely to find a keeper in a reg tga bean because they don't sell fems.
Regs are for people that want to breed or have to have a certain strain that isn't available in fem.

Fair enough, my test is not definitive, but there are 25-30 breeders in that list so the pattern has definitely got my attention.

Worth noting, I found only one semi-keeper from Rare Dankness, Gage Green and Mr Nice combined, which are known to be high quality breeders but regs only. I had to search TGA quite a bit to get 3 ladies that could hold their own against the fems. None of the stuff from Cali Connections regs made the cut, but many of their fems were impressive and hard to choose between. I ran a bunch of Sin City regs and found nothing. Then I ran a pack of their fems and found 2 amazing Tangerine Power ladies and the Alien Nightmare fem was a contender. All of this is taken into account in the numbers above.

I have a simple theory why fems seem to perform significantly better. It is relatively easy for a breeder to locate 2 badass females and simply test their progeny. But it is not so easy to select the most perfect male from among a group of males. You have to test each of their progeny just to attempt to identify the most suitable male and even then, you could get outdone by a breeder that put the same amount of energy/time into selecting a super female that crossed successfully with another super female.

I dont think breeders should hesitate to breed with cuts from fem beans, it happens in nature all the time. A female plant gets pollinated by female pollen from a nearby hermie, that seeds grows into a female and later on gets pollinated by a male. Those progeny descended from femmed beans and they are in the ancestry of all cannabis, thousands of times over. So no worries breeding with cuts that came from fems because they all already have anyway. I understand breeders are concerned about their varieties being hermie prone, but many of the regs I ran were susceptible to slight hermie.

In other words, when you reverse a female you are just extracting pollen, not selecting for a hermie prone trait, so there is no decrease in stability. I noticed that with the very first fem bean I ran, G13 Labs Durban Poison. The flavor and potency really wowed my friends and I and it was a very stubborn pure female, refused to hermie.

Wow, very impressive work! That Kandy Kush looks like a beast!

Finding weed that smells good is easy....but finding weed where the taste matches up to the smell is not so easy. I'm forever on the hunt for that taste, so I really appreciate this info!

Thanks man I will check Sannie's & E$cobar out it does sounds good. I have been on a bean buying spree lately and have a ton of stuff in the pipeline along with some clone-onlys to compare against the keepers, Cherry Pie, Thin Mint, GG#4, Bruce Banner #3 and Chem91.

I grabbed a pack of Cannaventures Gorilla Wreck fems that are vegging up and another batch of Divine - Chem D X GSC forum fems sprouting.

I still run a few regs in the line up, Exotic Kimbo Kush, like @torontoke pointed out sometimes you have no choice if you want to search a certain flavor. I am hoping more breeders will give fems a try as these kinds of reports come in.

Thanks Torontoke, your input is for sure appreciated. Good point regarding Bodhi, I have not tried them yet but recently was very lucky to recieve a selected Bodhi - Apollo11 genius X C99 lady, currently vegging up as we speak can't wait to try her out!

She is sleeping in this pic and needs to be potted up but in good health

I think this happens because you have a fem seed that was produced by selfing the female plant. This further pins down genes that the breeder was looking for. In the reg case the seed does not have that other cross so it has more variety.

Basically we can choose to get variety or as close to what the breeder wanted us to get. That is what I see from the data which is a cool way to look at seed purchases.

Regs are for people that want to breed or have to have a certain strain that isn't available in fem.
For me it's the latter. If a fem and reg is available of the same strain, I always go fem, but until lately that meant choosing between just a handful of companies - many, like GHS and Barney's are known for crap.

Hopefully, more solid breeders will notice that IHG's fem beans are most always sold out, and get the idea. Imagine not having to cull half your Gojis or Chernobyls. :weed:

You sample size is much too small to think feminized seeds are better than regular, I have had the opposite luck but I am not ready to deem regular seeds better. I have popped around 1000 seeds in 10 years of growing and really don't agree with this feminized or regular is better, they both can have keepers really no telling, yeah feminized will produce more females but also produces more phenotypes and feminized seeds aren't as stable as regular seeds. I personally prefer regular seeds on the chance I get an extremely rare male that I can use for breeding. It only take 1 really good male to have a break through in breeding, reversing elite clones is cool but in my opinion I like to breed with a male plant. And you killed all your male plants, you could have had an elite one but you didn't bother with growing them out you could have had something really special and you just killed it off so you never know what those regular beans had in them because you killed off half them for being males.

I don't think your sample size is enough to really paint beautiful broad strokes. A little shaky but I found it an entertaining post. I would be interested in taking 500 fems vs 500 regs and seeing who the champion was out of them. But it would have to come from one strain, I think you are on to something though!
