Hi, why do some brand new and unused HPS light has that darkness in the ends of the center tube like they look used.(same whey as they end up looking after been done one 4.5 month round )... when the light supposed to be new and unused from store...store claimed that the light been tested in factory before sent to store for sale...is this happening or bullshit...

Just watched a video where a guy explained that the bulbs center tube should always be pure white when the light is new and unused...

Their should be some form of quality control, where out of let's say 100 bulbs they would test 1 but it should also be marked on the box, usually with QC stamp, I have had new HPS bulbs with dark end tips but no problem

Id assume every factory produced light and bulb is tested before they can be sold or else no quality certificate can be given. To not test and check every bulb could be costly to reputation and dangerous to end users. Why chance somthing so simple and inexspensive to do at point of manufacture.

Im not sure it answers the question though :-)

Lots of shops think they are slick enough to pull one run off a bulb put it back in box and watch the sucker buy without checking it out... lots of new growers fall for them.. in the shop I go to there is always 3-4 bulbs out ... one is always used! Too bad I only buy them if they are white no darkness until I power them up!

I would really want to hear the manufacturers opinion on this that do they send lights out like that to the dealers..those packages are without seals and way too easy for grow shops to have their first round of usage and then put back to the package without you knowing..

After running a brandnew bulb for an hour ...when u switch it off it WILL be white (zero black)if not its used.........gavitas brand new bulbs r black at ends when str8 out the box ......put light on for an hour..?switch it off and hey presto white as it should be(and stays that way).........if you follow this procedure and its still black get it sent back.......

Man you guys are really paranoid to think a shop is going to jeopardize their business over a $100-$150 bulb. If you think your local shop is screwing you, don't make a thread about it, go to the shop and call them out on it.

Hortilux bulbs have a brown monogram that turns orange after about 10hrs use. Buy quality brand bulbs from a reputable supplier and its a non issue.

I highly doubt every bulb is test fired , but I could be wrong. Most quality control programs are just a series of documented procedures that should produce a good product with spot testing of products, something like every 100th part is checked. Anyone that's ever worked in any type of manufacturing environment knows this.

Ive never worked for a factory or company that didnt test every single electrical product leaving the production line, it is simple to apply voltage or even just test current and stamp qc on the box. I can imagine they test every bulb wether weed or just basic domestic.

if you dont test then upon death from a fault you will be liable to be sued for a very very large negligence payout, testing is the most cost effective method always :-)

Years ago I used to buy used lights from a shop here in Portland. They had been used for one grow. That's all some of the growers would use them for. They were Hortilux for $15. I used them one more time and then got another one. I still have a bunch in a box in the garage as backup. A used light is better than no light in an emergency.

Can I ask what the difference is then between a top of the line bulb and a cheap $10 bulb if you're just going to use it 1 time? Or do you have to be expert level to see the benefits?

I agree I put the name Protopia up there, gave them proper acknowledgement on Amazon reviews and started a thread about those scumbags on here too, they sold me a bulb that looked more burnt than the bulb I was replacing!!!

I buy only Vivosun now, I've never gotten a used bulb and they are packed very securely
