Mary Chiva's Papaya Aurora Indica Grow Journal

Well, I'm now convinced that aurora2 and aurora3 are males. I just got done checking them and the balls seem more pronounced. Today is transplant day, so I will be getting rid of aurora's 2 and 3...sorry dude's. By the time I transplant I should be even more convinced they are males.

This will leave me with 5 remaining plants, 3 of them are confirmed females and are all papaya's. This means I'll have 4 papaya's and 1 aurora indica left. Hopefully aurora1 is a female, I don't see balls but I do see starting of preflowers (they are very small still). It looks like the aurora's are slower to flower (at least right now) than the papaya's. We'll see how they all finish out to find out which strain is faster. So far though, I like growing the papaya's more. I had very high success rate germinating the papaya seeds and I certainly have more females from this strain. I guess, in the end, the smoke will really make the determination for which one I like best.

I'm actually happier with less plants (sort of). I never really wanted to grow 8 (or even 10 if you read the first post in this thread). The only reason I planted so many is to make sure I had some females. If I get 4 (or even 5) females I'll have more than I need. Not only that, the light will have a better chance penetrating further down the plants now (more area because of less plants). Also, I don't have to water 8 plants. You see, I'm using tap water and I leave 1 gallon jugs open for at least 24 hours to evaporate any chlorine...if I run out of water (because they haven't sat open long enough), I could damage the babies. This hasn't happened yet because I'm pretty diligent in making sure I have enough 'chlorine evaporated water' around to take care of things. I'm just saying with less plants it will be easier to manage.

Updates to come after transplant. MAYBE I'll give you all a group pic shot.

yeah, i didn't really want to imply your little guy went to hell.. i just never knew of a better time to use that thing and wanted too....

its really amazing how much water you can go through. i have to carry all of my water in gallon jugs too.. all though, i don't have chemically clean water, its still a rather big chore.

3-5 plants will be a good number, especially with that large of pot size, unless there taller than wide..

what is the flower time for your two strains? (weeks)

your doing great!

yes to the family photo..

As far as taller/wider...I think they will be more wide/bushy. The stockiest one is papaya1. She isn't as tall as papaya2 or papaya 4, but papaya1 definitely is gonna produce some bud...there is not a lot of room between internodes. The other females are a little taller and more 'spread out' on the main stalk, but all are about as wide as each other. The 2 tallest plants are aurora2 and aurora3 and both are males...they shall die tonight :: shrugs ::

Both strains are around 7-9 weeks flowering, so hopefully I'm more on the 7 week side. We'll have to wait and see.

Sorry for being late everyone, but the transplant is now done. It went ok and all confirmed females have been transplanted (3 plants). I left papaya5 in the 2 gallon pot because being only 7 inches tall, I can't imagine 'she' will need a 3 gallon pot like the rest of the plants. I didn't have as solid of a rootball that I would have liked with the transplanted plants...some of the dirt broke away when I did the transplant. Hopefully I didn't shock them, we'll find out soon. What happens when you transplant shock a plant?

Like a moron, I broke off a branch on one of the plants during the transplant, so, not to lose out on bud, I turned the broken branch into a clone. I couldn't find my rockwool cubes...so I just put the clone in rooting hormone and then planted it in the dirt. We'll see if it works of not. I'm still leaving the clone in 12/12 state...and not to returning it to veg. I just didn't want to lose out on bud from a stupid mistake.

Here's the bad news....ALL aurora's, yes ALL aurora's are males. It's a real bummer, but at least I have more aurora seeds for a future grow. This just proves my point that I like growing the papaya's better. I had better germination rates with the papaya's and I certainly have a better female ratio.

Well, here's 2 group pics of the new configuration. Let's hope things keep going smooth and that the transplant didn't screw anything up. I'd be so pissed...

When I transplanted my papayas I want to get rid of all the garbage MG soil so I shook them down to just the roots and dropped in the new hole and dumped dirt on them. I though for sure it would shock the shit out of them but they took right off in the new dirt. I am putting up some new pics after this on my journal. I have dial-up so it takes forever to upload. Good job.

Thanks for the encouragement and the complement. I'll know how well they took the transplant the next time the lights are on and I get to take a peek. I'm just fearful for my little friends and a bit of a worry wort :wall:.

I sure hope that clone makes it.

If so i hope to god i get atleast a couple females bcuz all i got are auroras haha

Oh i took your advice and doing 36 hrs of darkness there about 24 hrs in the dark right now =]

I also took the 2 lowest branches from each of the bigger plants as clones to keep them from crowding each other in my setup =]

but other wise hows everything for you?

Yeah, all the aurora's were males 3 out of 3, no females at all. All my females are papaya's and I have 3 females and 1 papaya plant not showing sex yet. I also took 1 clone yesterday, so if it lives, I should get something like a 1/4 oz from it (I hope!!).

I'm glad to hear you did the long dark period, it works, no joke!

Besides the male bummer...everything is great and the remaining plants are healthy :)

I just checked on our friends and everything seems to be doing ok. The top of papaya2 (remember the numbering from my pics) is bending/sagging, I'm not sure why exactly. It actually looks like it is growing toward the bulb, again not sure. Papaya2 used to be directly under the bulb and things have changed for her, so.... Everything else looked fine with the plant, so hopefully the top will strengthen up. She is also taller and lankier than the rest of the girls too. The rest of the papaya's look great and will need a watering soon. It's very cold out right now. I'm really hoping there aren't any issues I need to be concerned with. Let's hope the space heater and insulation do their job...they are being put to the test.

The clone is drooping. This has happened to me in the past with a seedling that I transplanted and it perked up after a few days. Granted, this is not a seedling, but a cutting instead and it needs to grow roots. I did give it hormone before sticking in the dirt. I made sure the soil was moist and stays moist. Hopefully the clone will grow and do something. Otherwise, I broke a branch off for nothing (it was an accident anyhow).

So far so good...I'm keeping as close an eye as I can on them. Updates to come if I have something exciting.

I am changing the 'weekly pic update' to Friday's. Friday 12/12/08 (haha) was the first 12/12 light cycle. We can use the Friday weekly pic update as a gauge to keep track of weekly flowering progress. Every Friday will be the start of a new week.

It looks like everything is fine with papaya2. I checked the plants today and #2 was perked back up...she has pistils coming out of the top too. Oh and my temps yesterday were alright...they got to 59 degrees and I kicked the heater up some to get temps up closer to 70. The temps should be back to normal (70s) by tomorrow (if they aren't already).

The clone didn't look good during today's check. We'll see how it looks tomorrow. My guess is it won't make it...but maybe I'll get lucky.

Updates to come on Friday w/ pics unless something is worth writing about.

Do u think any of mine will be female, thats a bummer bro im sorry to hear that!
It's really hard to tell without seeing pre-flowers. The one papaya I had that was a male I would have sworn was going to be a female, so I guessed wrong with him. They say that males usually - but not always - have real strong, thick stems and sporadic (not uniform) branching, plus less foliage. This is how aurora2 and aurora 3 looked mostly through their grow and both were males. I thought aurora1 was going to be a female right up until I went to transplant and he had balls... What I'm trying to say is...it's really hard to tell, but sometimes you 'can try' to guess. I actually was right from the beginning about aurora 2 and 3 but was wrong about aurora1. I NEVER thought papaya3 would have been male...it was a BEAUTIFUL plant, very stocky, perfect branching, TONS of foliage, but he had balls. It was just a healthy male plant.

Keep the faith...you'll get some females. People obviously grow aurora's for a reason. I'm real bummed I didn't get any to smoke this time around, but, the good news is I have 5 more aurora seeds. One day a WHILE from now I will plant them. Maybe I will get some girls then.

For now, I'm happy with 3 definite female plants and a possible 4th. Goooo papaya! :bigjoint::bigjoint:bongsmiliebongsmilie

Ok, so I have an update... It looks like the clone is going to make it after all, at least, it's perked up and looks to want to grow. Yesterday, the clone was completely drooped over and looked like it might die.

It also looks like papaya5 is finally showing signs of pre-flowers (this was the runt, remember?) This just goes to show how much longer you have to wait for a plant to show sex when it isn't really ready for 12/12. The plants that were about 12 inches all showed pre-flowers within 4-5 days from 12/12. Papaya5, which was about 5-6 inches when 12/12 started, took about 10 days to start showing pre-flowers. I don't know yet if it is a male or a female. Let's hope for 1 more girl!!!
