Why not just have a general catagory example water with subcatagories under it for soil, hydro?

The subjects need to be listed so someone who is looking can click on what they want. They worst thing we can so is make them have to hunt for their info. Does anyone remember how OverGrow had their's set up simple to navigate. Let me see if I can dig that up for you.

What i posted earlier which has now come up, is my idea. Running more like the chapters of a complete grow guide.

The categories listed cover a wide area while still keeping it short and simple.

In the Experienced and Advanced folders I agree 100%., but not in the New Grower folder.

In the new grower folder I beleive we have to lead them through the information we know they need to know - not what they think they want to know - all they'll be doing is looking up how increase their yield all the time instead of concentrating on how to grow healthy plants and avoid common beginner mistakes.

Yield increasing is an Experienced or Advanced grower topic in my opinion, although it can certainly be mentioned within the 'New Grower' section I don't think it should be in much detail. Let's teach them how to grow healthy plants first before they start worrying about maximising yield.

Does anyone remember how OverGrow had their's set up simple to navigate. Let me see if I can dig that up for you.
As far as I'm aware it was like this, and this is only part of it.

Do you think we should start with indoor or outdoor, then goto hydro / soil and go from there because the Water, nutrients and addatives management would be different for soil or hydro
On a topic light water nutrient and addatives. The sub categories may be something like.

Osmosis
hard water
irrigation
nutrients
macro nutrients
nitrogen
phosphorus
potassium
secondary nutrients
chemical fertilizers
organic fertilizers
oragnic teas
mixing fertilizers
fertilizer application

With anything that could go either way, just put the subject first and then chose soil or hydro

While overgrow was probably good, the site is well out of date now.

Lets not be another overgrow clone. lets have our own faq.

Ease of navigation. Short and simple. Then let the thread so the explaining. Pictures within those threads to further help explain making them turtorials would be even better. Instead of making the explainations wordy they need to be step by step in many cases.

And we need to remember to split long explainations up into short paragraphs. Keep the wording simple we are not trying to impress anyone with our use of the English language here. Or trying to flustrate anyone by making them use a dictionary just to figure out what we are saying.

Totally don't want to be an OverGrow clone but thought it might give us a place to start is all.

Lets not be another overgrow clone. lets have our own faq.
I certainly agree 100% with that - if we have the opportunity to structure our own FAQ and content, then that's what we should do. It is interesting however, to see how Overgrow was structured as much of the information on here came from Overgrow originally.

Regarding the Hydro, Soil question, if I'm understanding it correctly, how about doing the same here as the New Grower, Advanced Grower etc? ie split the folder at it's top level into

Soil
Hydro
Soil and Hydro

And put the topics relevant to each into those folders, rather than say have a folder on Nutrients and having it then split out into separate Hydro and Soil files. It's really just trying to get common subjects into the same folders.

But then we are back to click on this catagory to get to this. Do you want catagories and sub catagories? What if someone new is looking for one certain article do they just have to keep clicking away until they find it?

We need to remember to keep it simple. If not people will use it once of twice and then give up.

if you look through any comprehensive grow book, if its jorge cervantes or ed rosenthal or whoever, they dont split the book into soil and hydro. It should all work out that you start like a really good manuals contents. The sub-categories would then branch out from them, keeping all common information together, where there is a difference from outdoor/indoor or soil/hydro it should still be within the same section. So starting out with soil or hydro will only expand the faq's not clarify it.

nongreenthumb

This is just an example and i have already posted it once, there may be more top level categories but if we start from something like this which covers a lot of areas and then branch out.

Setting up the grow room

Lights, lamps, electricity

Water, nutrients and addatives management

Environmental

Pests fungus and disease

Stages of growth

Harvest and curing

Breeding

Case studies

Cooking

Diy

Outdoor growing

Yield improving tips

Grow methods

Seeds and strains

So then the user click on nutrients or whatever, then the second menu comes up which splits that section up into more detailed areas. At this point if there is a difference for doing it soil or hydro, this is the time to give that choice.

Its all very well coming up with these ideas, but only mogie and I have actually seen the admin side of things.

There is no graphics or anything like that, its more about managing categories.

What will have to be done though is that the team will have to go through every single article and see how it can be made better

nongreenthumb

Well-Known Member
What do you think though mogie, you have been inside the admin area for faq.

I dont think we should try and get to clever with the headings, keep it simple. You need the overall categories to be the front page. If you start with

beginner
intermediate
advanced

Where the hell do we put cloning
Where would i find something where the users interpretation could make a difference as to whether or not he finds what he is looking for, i dont think that going down this route would be progression. Its about making it easier to find.
