Obama's Drilling for Oil and Gas,,,Still not Like Him!

i've seen hydrogen generators that are powered by solar panels
I've seen them too. I think Shell had some at their first Hydrogen refueling station. It only generates enough power for a very small bit of Hydrogen. Solar is still too expensive and doesn't operate at full capacity on cloudy days. It too has a long way to go, or else we'd all be using it.;-) Wind power has similar problems. There are only certain parts of the country that get enough wind year round to meet a good percentage of our energy needs. Wind farms need maintenance and it too is very expensive. If we make 100% of our electrical power renewable then automatically Hydrogen becomes more appealing. As it stands currently, we still rely on coal fired power for 70-80% of our needs. If you do the math it is more costly to produce a gallon of hydrogen and it dumps more carbon into the air (by way of coal fired plants) than a gallon of diesel or gasoline. :leaf:

You and that nasty logic again Doc....

Coal works day OR night. (solar doesn't)

Coal is plentiful...very...and cheap...very.

Coal doesn't slaughter tens of thousands of migrating birds each year (wind does)

Since carbon cannot be linked scientifically to global warming..... what's the real problem? None is the answer.

..............sorry. I forgot.

I can't seem to turn off my logic switch.

I have researched quite thoroughly. It is still highly inefficient next to Coal.

They are starting to build a solar "plant" about 40 miles from me, and I was asked to take a look at some environmental concerns. I was given a tour and as we just keep driving and driving along with the power rep I finally asked...just how big is this thing you are building? 500 acres of solar....500!

Coal takes 50 acres of land to produce 24/7 at 99% efficiency. Nothing come CLOSE to that.... nothing.

Even the rep admitted it will never compete with a coal plant. 10 times the space AND wiring AND infrastructure.... and still can't compete.

I'm not against alternative energy.... not at all.

I AM against rushing to a new technology that cannot do the job while scaling back what CAN and IS doing the job.... just so ppl can feel good.

It's backward thinking.

Yeah, coal is great and all....dirty as hell, but great. I say leave it around until we phase it out slowly over a long time, too many folks depend on it for a living at the moment. Maybe subsidize folks in the coal industry who want to train and get into alternative, more sustainable technology....or at least cleaner.

We have come a long way in cleaning it up and it can be cleaned up further. that needs to continue... but yes... until another technology is READY and ABLE to compete with Coal at or near the cost of coal... it's a non starter for the country.

Careful.... lightning may strike us both tonight.

I saw an article about this today and it makes me sad. The US isn't going to be able to drill itself into energy independence, only renewables.

I only agree with what CJ said in the short term. In the long term, solar makes more sense as it starts to pay for itself after a while. Renewable/sustainable energy is where we should start to make back some of this trade deficit....invent and export

Shittily enough, imports own the solar market.

Talk about it. A good deal of the advances in making solar cheaper and better have come from....the rising dragon

The most efficient energy is nuclear.
Hmmmm so close Cracker with your answer..but the correct answer would have been the sun...In a way you are right because the sun itself does have a nuclear fusion process which man has yet learned to harness or duplicate... the Sun is the source of most of the energy on Earth--the power source for plants, the cause of flows of atmosphere and of water, the source of the warmth which makes life possible. None would exist without it. It also aids in me getting a good amount of vitamin D ( no sun-block needed  )
