I know what you mean. Turning on the central air will swamp your light bill if you got a decent sized place. Just something to think about. I got the same problem.
for my room, I was thinking about cooling the house like normal with central air, and exhaust the grow room to the outside, pulling fresh are from the house. circulating the exhaust back into the house costs to much to cool back down in the summer. the only thing I haven't figured out yet, is where to blow the exhaust that isn't spotable with an ir camera.

Sorry I didn't get to post pics yesterday...I had a crises. My outdoor babes have got a case of mold/mildew or something...so I was freakin out a bit trying to cure them. I'll do it today. My idea has ended up working out pretty well.
Heres what I did: I took a piece of ply wood and cut it into a rectangle that was a little bigger than the air vent for the house ac. I cut a 4" hole in the center and attached some dryer ducting to it. Then I removed the vent thing from the floor(so now there's just a hole...no metal grate) Next I screwed the plywood to the floor over where the vent was.....then ran the ducting to my grow area...and at the end of that ducting I got a 4" in-line booster fan(one like you can get at home depot) It seems to work great....you get increased pressure from the air vent just from reducing the outlet to that 4 in. line...and then the booster helps it come out stronger still. Also one great great advantage is that even when the ac is off...that booster fan is still pulling cooler air that is in the duct system under the house. So there it is in a nut shell.
Noob...I bet a 270 with the sealed reflector will work well. You can always go over the 60w/sq ft. too....like I have....but I'm paying for it. I may look into a cool tube or something for mine.

Yes! thats sounds like an awesome idea! I live in a trailer so I should be able to pull that off since my vents are below the floor. Shenagan...how far a distance is the floor vent from your light and is there any curves in the ducting? does it make really matter?
Its a good stretch...well not much...but its about 10 feet I guess. I've got the one bend where it comes out of the floor and then another where it goes upwards once it gets to the grow area. There was good pressure before I ran the duct vertical but once it has to lift 6 feet it looses a bit....so thats why I put the booster fan at the end.

I run a 600 hps in 2x3x6.5 sealed cab. I use a cool tube w/ 6" duct and a 478 cfm fan for the cooltube. If i blast it and dont exhauset my cab at all it gets to 90 when my ambiebt is at 72 but takes a few hours.
I also have a can 33 and another 478 cfm for my cabinet exhaust. This only turns on when my temp hits 90. It takes my temp back down to 85 and shuts back off. I do this because i used CO2.
When i dont use CO2 i run the fan for the can 33 conatsntly at about 175 cfm. It keeps my cab temp at 74-76. I use a single 6" passive intake. Both fans are on speed controllers.

i do a closet grow and ive found it more practical to cut the bedroom off from central air the closet in that bedroom is the grow room but i put a window unit in the bedroom closet is 100% airtight 2ft D x 8ft W by 8ft high passive 8in exauhst with an spring loaded cover so when fans are off there is no draft or air leaks leaving passive intake got a 6 in canfan and carbon filter as exhauhst 270cfm for grow room exaust

for 2 400w hps i got one 8 in passive intake hole split into two 6in duct tubes to the lights out of the lights i have the two 6in exit ducting conect into an 8in x 6in x 6in y connection and this fan

keep temps in mid 70's air conditioner in room help isolate that room at a steady temp so the rest of the house can be changed acording to how it feels without effecting plantswhen exaust kicks on for g.r. the passive intake opens up sucks the air outta the room shuts off passive intake closes a/c get room back to 76 if the temps raise too much when lights are on 8in can fan is in constantly dont know the canopy temps but never had a problem with burning leaves keep light about 8-12in away from plants every ducting is insulated ducting using wentilation caulk on all conections making sure room is airtight never really had probs with temps or noise oh yea i have a buffer room that i keep the fans in put some rubber underneathe the bolts bolt real tight and make a box with walls and sound insulate the walls keeps noise and vibration down to almost nothing
