The problem was with the stem, pythium. I heard the term 'damped off' from an experienced grower.

killed that disease ridden slut, all scrubbed out ready for a nice clean virgin.

I did how ever take a clone from it (which I have kept completely seperate from the setup)

Any one know if it's likely to reappear? More a test of curiosity.
 
If you do everything the same it might happen again. Can you lower the drip ring so it doesn't get the stem wet?
 
not without cutting the diaphragm / downpipe down. I could just add more medium to raise the bed. Any body have any experience with the waterfarm? Ie how often to feed? A mix of errors caused this, over watering was definitely one of them
