Well, in the states here, it's either prison or jail. misdemeanor = county jail. But, you can pick up a non violent felony, get sentenced to one day less than a year(if the judge is a dick) and do your time in your local county jail.
Jail time here in California, you actually only do about 70% of the time.
State prison time here in Cali, you only do 50% of the time, then paroled
