What you were told is correct. Let them get dry to the touch, then put them in a dark airtight container. pour them out for a couple of hours every day and put them back in. Repeat for 5-7 days, this will cure them and provide the best taste.
anywhere I read and anywhere you read will say to hang in a dark dry place, around 30-45% RH until outsides of buds are crispy but stems still bend a little without snapping then jar it up and open the jar once or twice a day until desired dryness is reached
At minimum. The longer you cure the bud, the better it should turn out. I would take a separate jar and let some bud cure, sample it at different stages/days/weeks into your cure then compare. Enjoy

When buds are hand trimmed and hang dried with skill, less resin is knocked off the harvest and a greater potency, flavor and aromas result. Further, when buds are carefully hung, they tend to dry slower, which means a better tasting, scented and smoother product.
