Puretane BHO Run Evaporation Question

So far I've gone through 72 cans of Whip It and have made up 1/2 pound of shatter. Nice and golden clear color. I've been doing just as I described. 5 gallon chamber with pie shell parchment inside on my heating pad. No problems, and no mess. Works perfectly.

I’ve been open blasting until I run through my last master case, but I use a jacketed splatter platter and dome with PTFE film inside. I have a quick clamp connecting the column to the chamber. When I’m done blasting I pop off the column and pump warm water through the chamber. I used screened gaskets on the ports to vent and keep bugs out until it’s ready to be capped off. I get virtually no evaporation. It’s about as safe as possible without being completely closed loop.

I figure the ballpark is 8ml/gm I use 4000ml ( 2.4kg ) for 500gm of sample with butane. I find the weight of the solvent is more important than the volume. When mixing solvents or preparing for a run the predetermined amounts weighed into a separate cylinder, then when recovered continuously weighed to determine recovery.

I'm about to finally start running a closed loop system. This is something I've been wondering. Do you just run it the first time and watch through a port window, then keep the weight numbers for future reference? Like how do I know how much butane to use? I know I use 8 cans in my column, but I have no idea what the equivalent is if I'm using a tank of butane instead of cans.

Closed-loop means that you have a sending/recovery cylinder. Weigh your sample matrix, calculate volume at 8ml/gm then weigh the proper amount of solvent at 600 gm per liter into your sending/recovery cylinder. VIOLA!

Yeah, a recovery tank is what I meant. I have the whole setup except for the tank, which I did have, but it was crappy triclamp column kind so I never used it.

So I weight my material, then multiply the grams buy 8. Say I have 100 grams. I need 800ml of butane. A 1000ml of butane weights 600g. So need to fill the recovery tank with roughly 450g of butane? This is too much math for 2am, but I think I understand the concept.

When you invest in the extra plumbing and paraphernalia going to closed-loop anything under 500gm per blast wouldn't be cost efficient at all.
When I start a run I prep a minimum 1500gm of sample.

haha. I was using it as an easy mathematical example. I usually run like a half lb. I would need a bigger vac oven if I ran more. I jockeyed a muffin for over an hour yesterday trying to not touch the walls.

I'm tired of spending money on master cases, and also feel a little guilty sluffing off so much into the environment. I'm basically running a closed loop now, I'm just not recovering the butane.
