Read "We The Living" by Ayn Rand. This is strikingly similar to “volunteering” to attend party functions.
Maybe it'll help them break free of the usual state of mind (me, me, me, me, out of my way, me, me, me, )
i think the government should stay as far out of education as possibleCollege degrees may not be worth as much as they used to, but you still need one to get hired for most jobs. And while it's true that some degrees aren't worth much, others really will teach you a lot. You can BS your way through a sociology major, but don't try and do that with electrical engineering.
Just for the hell of it, what way do you think it should be?
right, but they could just do it themselves if they caredI think the idea behind community service is to teach them that they share the planet with other people.
It certainly wouldn't kill them, there's all this talk these days about teens and kids being obese, some community service might take a few pounds off those who need it. Get them off their PS playing butts.
If they don't want to do it, that's fine, they just don't get the money. Or don't graduate from public school. I'm sure you wouldn't suggest that an employee is allowed to say "fuck this, i'm not doing it" do his boss and not get fired, right?right, but they could just do it themselves if they cared
the thing about america is individuality, honestly they can be able to say "fuck this, im not doing it" if they want
besides i just disagree with that because of what i said earlier

Well, there are government jobs, but ignoring that matter, I was just pointing out that if no one is forcing you to do community service, there shouldn't be a problem.Since when is the government your boss? I think you've got it backwards. They work for us.
I know what you mean. And I think this is a good way to get students involved in community service. They might just find out that they really like it.I used to take care of a flower box for a community service project. It was voluntary and I love flowers so I took care of them for about 5 years. It made me feel proud to drive by them and see how nice they looked.
Government employment is completely irrelevant to the discussion and bringing it up is a weak diversion. The topic at hand is compulsory servitude. Not being able to graduate from a public school unless you "volunteer" is coercion. Volunteerism is a great thing. I encourage everyone to find a worthy cause and donate time and/or money to it. If there are consequences for non-compliance it's compulsory not voluntary.Well, there are government jobs, but ignoring that matter, I was just pointing out that if no one is forcing you to do community service, there shouldn't be a problem.
Interesting that you should immediately jump on the part of my response I distinctly said to ignore. Is not being able to graduate unless you do your homework also coercion/compulsory servitude? It's a fucking school. They make you do work that has educational value every single day, if they're doing their jobs. That's the way education works.Government employment is completely irrelevant to the discussion and highlights the weakness of your argument. The topic at hand is compulsory servitude.
