Would you defoliate these?

This is my 2x4 setup using mars hydro's sp3000 led (300w). Currently on day 19 of flower everything seems to be going well. The two plants are in a nft system ec at 1.6 at the moment, should I defoliate and lolipop tm these and if so when would be the best time? would appreciate people opinions

They look good and healthy great job so far! I personally like to defoliate at week 2 of flower all the big fan leaves that only point towards the inside of the plant. I find if I remove all inward pointed leaves it opens up the inside of the plant, allowing maximum light to penetrate to the inner smaller buds helping to form those long colas. I also clear the bottom part of the plant from any foliage that isn't getting adequate light, also helps with airflow at this stage helping prevent any bud mold from starting.

Thanks for the response , I was thinking the same I have fully stripped one befor and I dont think it did it many favours although all the flowers was prime nugs just didn't seem to conect as well.. but on the other hand I tried not defoliating any one time and the bottom of the plant was full of popcorn waist buds that had no light so was yellow

For defoliating, It is mostly about leaf surface and airflow. You want to get as many photons to each leaf as possible for photosynthesis. A good analogy that I use to train growers is to think of each leaf as a mini solar panel that is converting light energy. You should defoliate the leaves that are shading out more leaf surface then that leaf has by it's self. By doing this you are getting more photons to more leaf surfaces by picking that one off. You also want to factor in the difference in light intensity between the leaf you are taking off to the leaves below it into that equation. You don't necessarily want to take of a top leaf that is getting full light for some bottom leaves that will eventually get no light as the plants get bigger, or is getting way less light intensity because they are 12 inches below the one you took off. I also take leaves off if they are overlapping other leaves and are messing up the transpiration process. Your plants don't look too squished together so I don't really see this being a problem for you.

Defoliation is bro-science nonsense like flushing, darkness before chop, planting or harvesting on the full moon, boiling roots, rusty nails through the stem, magical natural nutes that enhance terps, etc... That's why nobody can agree on what it is or how much you should do. It's just made up bullshit.

Because those replies to reference any real science. Photosynthesis and plant transpiration based off of quantifiable variables like PPDF, Lfs, and airflow is not bro-science.

We already know you insist it isn't bro science but we can't find any actual science that supports defoliation. Can you link to any actual science that supports defoliation, like a randomized controlled trial or preferably a metaanalysis of multiple trials and published in a peer reviewed journal? Until those happen defoliation remains a hypothetical supported only by bros insisting it works great.

I am not sure if I will be able to find that to specific to defoliation. I can certainly link you to many scientific articles that explains transpiration and the photosynthesis process in a cannabis plant that supports my advice and why a grower should or shouldn't defoliate.

.

I defoliate on days 1 and 21 of flower, I adopted the method from Black Dog LED who have many videos showing great harvests after defoliation.

I'm not married to the method, I just borrowed it, but I've been happy with the harvests.

I'm vegging Serious Happiness (Serious Seeds) and after I take some cuttings off of the best plant I' going to run a clone tests to see which defoliation method is the best - no pruning, lollipop only, lollipop and defoliate once, lollipop and defoliate twice.

Now there is some bro-science for you. days 1 and 21 flower . What if I am running a 12 week strain and you are running a 6 week. And I am vegging for 8 weeks in massive pots outside and you are doing SOG inside? Does that schedule still apply?

i would gradually remove some of the lower leaves over days. Too much at once can stunt the progress of plant start at the lowest point and work you’re way up over time. Looking pretty healthy as they are so be a shame to hit it suddenlt with heavy defoliation and then stunt it. GL

Please don't post dup threads, it clutters the board unnecessarily.
Thank you.

I'm not sure why you make it a point to come in every defoliation thread and say the same thing over and over.

Cool. A lot of us have been doing it for a long time with results we deem worthy. Are there similar studies on lollipopping? I'm asking because I didn't learn to grow by reading scientific journals, but everyone seems to do it.

If you're going to argue the benefits of defoliation then photosynthesis is definitely not something that's going to benefit from defoliation. Are you trying to imply that defoliation is beneficial to photosynthesis?

I would clean up the bottom third and do a productive thinning.. Don't strip them bare..
