your money will go further with a nice acoustic. wouldn't hurt to get one with an amp jack on it though. hehehehhehee

Yeah, well it really depends on the person though. If someone likes rock genre music, they tend to want a electric move than an acoustic. Like for me, I have an acoustic and electric, but I mostly only play my electric as my favorite songs are played through with distortion. I rarely use my acoustic at all, maybe once a month...
Maybe.. i play metal all the time and is my music of choice but that doesn't mean you can't sit down and play some zepplin or somethin or just jam out on acoustic hell i have 6 electrics and 3 acoustics and there is so much to music that if you deprived yourself of one or the other then you are missing out on different exciting musical styles!!!

Well, I've decided

that I need to go to a guitar store. :-P

After doing some reading, MANY suggest that
I get to feel and hear the guitar I want to get...

and that makes a lot of sense instead of buying one
that looks like it will sound good on ebay....:-|

I also found that I better not go to wal-mart or target,

but a place called Guitar Center and talk to the
experts there.

And take a friend who plays guitar and let them
help me out.

So......

anyone who has suggestions on good brands
is welcome to post them here!!!

tah-tah!!!
IBANEZ ALL THE WAY My favorite ax is my Ibanez Prestige 7-string:hump:

Haha, thats like me, I love metal and thats about all I play. I guess acoustic is a good change now and then but I can just play on the clean channel with my electric. I got a half stack w/ eminence speakers, a tube powered stomp box and a tube amp head, and plus, I love my vintage bc rich mockingbird. Oh yeah, a word of advice, for Guitar Center all it is is about profitting. I'd say to try out their stuff there and buy it elsewhere. The reason is that they usually overcharge things and sell you stuff like their instruments put on display... I know its tempting to just buy it right then there and now but you'll regret it. If you're a beginner they'll be able to trick you easy. The only exception to this is only if you're able to bargain the price margin down to a good amount.

Remember this: If you're going for an electric guitar, try not to pick the ones that are made of agathis or basswood. I don't recommend it. To know the guitar's specs, either ask an employee or write down the guitar model somewhere to look up online. Oh yeah and the neck connection to the guitar body is important as well. Bolted on necks(pic#1) (Fenders are only made through this) are cheaper ways to produce a guitar (not necessarily bad), a way you can tell if its a bolted on neck or not is to flip the guitar to view its back and neck out how the neck is attached to the body. For bolt ons, you'll see screws and possible a metal plate as well but not always. Set necks (pic#2) are mostly apparent on Gibson guitars, you'll see it on Epiphones as well, primarilly on the SG and Les Paul models. To be able to tell if its set neck or not (again, flip the guitar and check out its back), the guitar will be attached to the body with some kind of adhesive (you won't be able to see that). Neck through (pic#3) guitars (presumably the best sounding way to attach a neck) provide your guitar with way more sustain than bolt ons and set necks. To be able to tell for that is to check out the guitar body. The whole guitar should appear as one whole, appearing as if the guitar is one solid piece (easiest way to describe it I guess). I know this seems excessive but you want your money's worth for what you pay for. For your budget, look into Epiphones and Fenders in particular. Fenders aren't bad at all, just overrated.

Anyway, if you choose acoustic, there's no technical things to watch out for, except for the kind of wood its made of. For both acoustic and electric, try to aim for either mahogany or alder. Agathis and bassword aren't terrible for a starter but I think its more price effective if you spend on something that will last....

Right on! The Schecters are some of the best bargains around. I set up every one that came in the shop I used to work at and they are almost perfect out of the box. Good tuners, TonePros bridges, excellent fretwork (rivals Gibson), and Duncan-Designed pickups. And their "easy-access" neck heels are great. Can't go wrong there.

I will always stay true to my Fender. I have a Fender double-fat strat with a 9-function tone function on board, with perfect action. I can shred michael angelo batio and then start playing some stevie ray vaughan. I wish I still played.. I played for about 11 years. I could definitely out-shred anyone on this board, i dont care what model Ibanez they have ;-)

I will accept this challange.
Lets make it intresting ........mabey a bet of 5 grand....says I will mop the floor with you.

Ive been playing guitar for 25 years.
My advice to purple kitty
is if your just bored and impulsive and dont want to put in the time and effort.
dont get a real guitar....It takes serious commitment and dedication. to learn how to play well.
