Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, or Xbox360 & Guitar Hero?

So, I've decided I'm going to splurge a little
when I get my check in Sept.

And I'm having trouble deciding what to get.

So I'm stuck between an acoustic guitar, an
electric guitar, or an Xbox 360 with Guitar Hero.

What do you guys think?

I love playing guitar hero, but I've always wanted
to learn to play real guitar.

They say electric guitars last longer because
you don't have to replace the strings.
(correct me if I'm wrong)

But I like the way acoustic guitars sound way more
than electric.

So, its either an Xbox 360 with guitar hero...

an acoustic guitar

or an electric guitar.

Suggestions?

considering you dont know how to play guitar, you should probably just get a cheap acoustic, and a white xbox360 :)

Real guitar > guitar hero

I have both.

An electric you still have to replace strings. plus you have to buy an amp.

Acoustics are great for learning. Get you fingers used to playing then it's easier to play an electric.

Pick up an acoustic at a pawn shop for less than $100 and buy a guitar tuner.

then learn how to read tab.

Very easy to learn. and surf this site for all the music you want to learn even basic lessons.

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/

Basic tab is so easy look at the 6 lines like the guitar is sideways.
0 means open string 2 means second fret and so on and so on.

I was leaning more towards acoustic. I like how they
sound. I was looking at some on Ebay and some come

with the learning guides.

Xbox will have to wait then. I was looking at those
too on ebay.

Is $180 for an Xbox, a controller, a wireless headset, ethernet
cords, USB cords and all that other crap a good deal?

I saw a used guitar hero set for $33 too.

Killer deals on ebay.

I just wanna know if its worth it to buy a refurbished Xbox with accessories, or a new one because of the warranty?

tab is a great thing but i would still strongly suggest learning how to read real music. its not that hard. hardest part is memorizing all the notes on the fret board. i honestly dont think acoustic is any easier than electric. i like electric better cuz you can play clean, distortion, and you could buy effects. you can even buy an acoustic effect.

Ebay has electric guitars with an amp and carry bag
for $99 free shipping.

But the acoustics are like $25 with $12 shipping and free
lesson books.

Thanks for the site.

So since I'm new to this I guess my choice will be acoustic.
:hump:

Its the cheapest thing to splurge on anyway. :-P

i have played guitar for about 6 years now...

make sure this is not an impulse buy

what i mean is playing guitar takes some self discipline...

when you first start, your going to suck

its going to be very very discouraging...

but you have to keep at it..

just trying to save you some money here cause there is no point in buying a guitar if its going to sit around

Do you think the lesson books come with
tutorials on how to read music?

or do you think they just teach how to play
the basic notes on the guitar?

Just remember you get what you pay for.

I have been playing for about 15 years.

Cheap guitars are hard to keep in tune.
The intonations are off.
and most important the string are super high above the fret board.
Which means hurting fingers.

Better guitars have a "lower action" which mean the strings are closer to the fret board which again is easier to play.

guitar hero is obviously nothing like playing a real guitar. They are two totally different beasts.

What you wanna play totally depends on what you want from the experience. Guitar hero is something you can basically pickup and play, whilst a real guitar will take longer/years longer to get any decent tunes happening, but the rewards are so much better for so many reasons.

If you got the ??patience?? go for a acoustic. Just remeber you get what you pay for a cheap acoustic will be just that, and sound just like that CHEAP.

Get the best you can afford, dont buy cheap crap you'll never play it, dont spend over your budget you be disapointed and feel like crap for spending to much, buy what you can afford.

It won't sit around. I promise. I've been wanting to learn
forever. I like to sing, even tho I suck, and I've always

wanted to write my own songs. Music is something I've always
loved. If I had a choice between music or tv, it would always

be music.

Thanks for the pointers and encouragement.

Yeah do what he said. What if you end up buying an expensive guitar and end up not likeing it or just giving up.
I currently am learning on a cheap acoustic guitar, it may not sound like a 500 dollar one but it gets the job done.

BTW youtube videos are the best way of learning IMO. Dont pay someone to teach you when you have free videos to do it :hump:

every "beginer" lesson book ive come across and used (not just for guitar) usually goes like this.

an introduction on what different notes look like. what different rests look like. the names of the notes on the staff and spaces and for guitar books they break it down by string. usually the 6th string (the fat one) to the 1st string (the skinny one). so youll learn the notes one string at a time.

I can play a mean over the hills and far away on my 20 dollar guitar
Ohh cool man you know all 3 chords of the intro?

I can play layenda on my daughters 3/4 nylon still doesnt mean it sounds better than my Tak.

Just messin with ya Johnny. You are right in the aspect that if you can play it doesnt matter what guitar you pick up.

But quality is quality no matter what you purchase.
A Kia will drive you across town but a Caddy is more comfortable.
