Hey man, thanks for the rep, can use all I can get. I've been having fun writing this journal too, great place for me to keep my notes as to when I did what too. I'm sure I'll be going back over it too.
You've got a point about the side lighting, I've been thinking how to get some cfl's (I'm thinking probably some 48w 2700k) in the corners. The plants have pretty well stuffed the grow space so there isn't much room for anything on the side, but I agree that I have to put something in the corners. I'll let everyone know when I come up with something.

yea man either that or id think about removing plant matter that isnt getting light so the plant can focus on other points of the plant
im not a gardening expert but im guessing the plant spreads its energy evenly throughout every branch?
i wish someone could confirm this or just call me out as wrong so i kno for the rest of my life lol
either way the proof i do have is ive seen shaded bud sites grow the most piece of shit nugs ever, that might as well be thrown in for hash or oil
id just rather have that energy used elsewhere
note- im making a thread on this now in advanced techniques

Great, I'd really like to know the answer myself. I don't know how this would relate to techniques like "lollypopping" which, in my opinion, have been thoroughly debunked, as they stop development of the plant.
But a little judicious thinning might be advantageous. Grape growers do this on their vines, they will cull half of the bunches to allow the plant to put all it's energy into those bunches that are left. I've already done a little cutting when I harvested the 6 clones for my next grow. These plants didn't seem to mind any, as a matter of fact, two days after taking the cuttings one of the plants grew too close to the light and seared a couple leaves.
I have questions, hopefully, as you've said, someone with more real experience can provide us the answers.

Okay, just ordered new cfl's for my new veg space. It looks like the 42w put out better light then the 65w and the price point per lumen was better too. I ordered 6- 6500k 42w and 2- 2700k 42w giving me a total lumen output of 22,400. My new space will be ~8 sf so that works out to 200 lumens/ sf. Not too much but hopefully enough.

Okay, quick update, they are growing nicely, still stretching, one is up to 35" now. They drank a gallon of water last night so I replaced the water and added a 1/6 dose of nutes to replace those used yesterday.
Every time I add a gallon I add a 1/6 dose of nutes, and on the seventh day I'll change the res and of course replace all the nutes. I'm just assuming that since they've used 1/6 the water in the res they will use 1/6 the nutes. I don't know exactly what they are using and how much of each, that's why I want to give them a whole new load of nutes as often as possible. My compromise between changing the res every day, this would of course give me a fresh dose with everything they need, but it would also hurt my bank account. So I will change once a week.
I do wish I could find a test kit that would tell me exactly which nutes were being used, that way I could be certain to have the exact dosage every day. I'm still looking!
I also think I'll start adding the Big Bud next week. I doubt they use much potassium yet as they are only now starting to flower. But seeing as they are they will soon be needing as much as I can give them.
That, and I finally finished shoveling the driveway. I love my long drive in the summer, hate it in the winter!

FryingPan, Are you using those sh nutes? I had a problem figuring out how to add them as well. I'm using Botanicare Pro now it's a lot less confusing just so much per gallon and I mix a gallon at a time to top off, and when I do a res change I just mixup 5 gal. Haven't had any problems since I changed over.. Sounds like your getting a hell of a lot of snow !? My boys are calling me and telling me to get ready to go boarding next wk. with all the time off I've been playing around with these damn plants and getting stoned evry day I'm waaay out of shape don't know if I can take the cold and altitude so soon !! Okay, you are 100% wrong. Plants concentrate growth upwards so the majority of the growth is verticle and not evenly as you had guessed..

That's why I'm moving slow on cutting anything out. I figure they are doing great as they are so why mess with anything. I feel that the worst is that I don't get many of the popcorn buds, I feel it will concentrate on the tops and they should do just fine as it is.
Though I will be polite to any and all suggestions.

Not any more. I used the grow nutes and am very satisfied with the results. but I don't know the makeup of their blossom nutes so I'm going with Advanced Sensi Grow parts A & B. Plus starting next week I'll be adding Big Bud on top. That will total 5.8-8.1-12.8 NPK. Hopefully that's enough of the N as Roseman has found we need to continue throughout the blossom cycle.
I will continue to use the SH grow nutes, if it ain't broke...

Okay, badda bing! I just found it. I've been so damn lucky this grow. I've done a lot of research, but the lucky part is I fell into this site, it's great guys, (and gals hopefully)!
I just switched to bloom, I've had a lot of luck with the SH grow nutes so what the heck, they know what they're doing right? But I had this worry, I didn't know what was in their nutes, what was the NPK ratio? Well, while reading one of Uncle Ben's threads there was a post from our own Roseman referring to his new experience with N in blossom nutes. There he mentioned the NPK ratio in the SH nutes, I was right, they were not good for bloom, I just fell into it, what luck.
I wasn't comfortable with the SH nutes and decided to buy the Advanced nutes for bloom. Actually, the Advanced nutes were suggested by a neighbor and those were the nutes that turned the light on for Roseman too. I think I found exactly what I want to use for my bloom nutes, the Advanced, (but I'm still looking at Schultz, I think they may have a competitive blend for a much lower price). You gotta keep your eyes open.

Things look to be going just fine today. This morning I checked and every plant is showing pistils, they are all coming along nicely. The leaves that got singed by the light seem to be far down the plant this morning they are all continuing to grow so fast. This light burn doesn't seem to have had a negative effect. I'm still willing to bet that I gain more by keeping the light close to the plant than I lose by the leaf singe. I try to avoid it, but if it happens it happens, I'm not going to be too worried about it.
This morning it occurred to me that I may have a problem finding it if one does go hermie on me they are packed so tight in the closet. That is my biggest fear right now, that one will herm and I won't find it until too late.

That's exactly what happened to me. Even with just 3 plants, it took me probably a week to find the male flowers and by that time it was too late.

Yeah honestly Fry when I look at your pics that thought has crossed my mind " what if one of those turns hermie he's fucked " But No one is safe from this problem even if you have fem seeds.
But Fry, your from the generation that was used to cleaning out the pot before you smoke it or roll it anyways. So I think you will be alright no matter what.

Believe it or not I still have my Brand X seed slide. A buddy of mine marketed them in the '70s. It's plastic, about 6" wide by 12" long and about 1 1/2" deep. It has two chambers, and a lid. The bottom is sloped, you poured the pot in and used a playing card to let the seeds roll down to the smaller chamber where you took them out. Most of the younger guys probably don't even recognize the procedure. I'll have to find that slide and get a picture up. It's quite the throw back to another age.
Funny, but I found the slide the other day when I cleaning some boxes out, that's where all the old seeds are that I used to grow. I must have been high when I found it because I'll be damned if I can't find it again. Must have put it one of those great places where I'll never lose it again. Sometimes I feel like I'm permanently stoned.

I've just posted this on another thread, but feel it's a pretty good bit of info and I want to keep it in my journal too.
You know, I've been thinking about that a lot lately. Cervantes did a real nice write up about this in his bible. Chapter nine, Light, Lamps, and Electricity. He outlined the parameters for consideration of lights, placement and wattage.
A 1000w HPS will put out ~140,000 lumens at 1' away
A 1000w HPS will put out ~35,000 lumens at 2' away
A 600w HPS will put out ~90,000 lumens at 1' away
A 600w HPS will put out ~22,500 lumens at 2' away
A 400w HPS will put out ~50,000 lumens at 1' away
A 400w HPS will put out ~12,500 lumens at 1' away
But you can't put them all the same distance away, the 1000w is much hotter than the 400w. And what we are dealing with when considering distance is the inverse square law. This law affirms that the intensity of light changes in inverse proportion to the square of the distance.
Here's the punch line.
We have to keep:
1000w HPS; ~3' above the tops, at 3' the 1000w put out 15,555 lumens.
600w HPS; ~2' above the tops, at 2' the 600w put out 22,500 lumens.
400w HPS; ~1' above the tops, at 1' the 400w put out 50,000 lumens.
Light intensity virtually doubles for every 6" closer an HID is to the canopy of a garden. I've singed a top twice by keeping my lamp real close, more like 6"-8" with the MH which is hotter than the HPS, I think this is a good strategy seeing as the plants have never seemed to mind getting a little hot, never hurt growth any. I always raise the light, but I never raise it more than 10" above the canopy.
Now the 400w can't cover the area the 1000w can, but for my money I'll buy the 400w and put more of them around for more, closer lighting and getting more lumens on those solar receptors we're feeding so diligently.
Plus when you consider the costs involved, I'm paying about $30/mo. for electric, that would be $75 for the 1000w. I just move them closer, sounds like a pretty easy way to save a few bucks, and be more energy efficient at the same time. Sure your 1000w is bigger than mine, but my sweetie is going to like mine better when I can buy her that fancy dinner!
