So i got this grow fixture free from a buddy the other day and the cord coming from the light has this halfway down. it gets really hot which is my worry. I'm hoping someone has seen one of these before and can give me a little info. thank you.

lol, I knew someone was gonna say something bout that. It's just a slang term and he didnt put any thought into it before he said it, I've made the same mistake before its just hard not to pick up the slang terms the people around you use.

That is a homemade ballast from appearances. I would assume it is not UL safety rated. I would not have that ballast in my house. My concern would be fire.

I wouldnt use it unless you go and find as much info on ballast building as possible and go over every part and make sure it is hooked up properly and not damaged in any way and replace anything that is. it also depends on how old the component are too though so you'd be best to replace them since you dont know how old they are. Not worth the time/effort/money(to replace old parts) imo

I am pulling around 9-10 amps through a long 15 amp extension cord. It is coiled up near the outlet, and after the system has been at full draw for a while it gets slightly warm (like if I step on it with bare feet it's noticeable), and I haven't ever worried about it. However, that thing looks a little freaky to me... I don't mind DIY, but I don't necessarily trust other peoples work in my own house, hehe
