First Grow: Are My Girls Looking, Okay?

Thanks Chief - I'm planning on chopping the rest of the colas Thursday morning, and maybe leaving a few of the smallest buds for another few days. I'm afraid to cut the buds that I've pollinated as they're on the very bottom branches. I don't want to take them before they're mature. I've had that seed tutorial bookmarked, so maybe I'll go back and read it over again. Don't want to risk my seeds being preemies and not viable later on... -Mandi

Chopped the other colas and largest buds this morning. I got 226g trimmed, and they're hanging up now to dry. I left the plants with their popcorn buds so they can have a few more days to see if they'll bulk up at all. If they don't seem to make much progress by next week, I'll just chop the rest and call it a day. My babies are doing quite well, so I think I'm going to let them veg until they hit 7 or 8 weeks. They've been growing fast since I started the Jacks Classic nutes last week - may as well get them as big as I can so they will yield more bud. Sure hope they end up girls after how pretty they look... -Mandi

Have you decided on what your doing with the trim? Do you have a smoke report on the Main Colas yet? Interested to hear about the smoke.

I've got the trim drying and I'm going to give that 'ice hash' recipe a try once its all dry. I still have the bud from the main colas curing in a big mason jar. I took one small bud back at 7 weeks flower, and thats what I've been rationing out to smoke. It seemed pretty good to me, but I'm not all that versed on what is considered great stuff as I've never been a big smoker. That may change now that I have access to my own crop and a decent supply for really cheap. I plan to have a couple friends who know their smoke give my bud a test and let me know how it compares to what they're used to buying. I'll let you know what the report is... -Mandi

Hey Manditroy, if you have never tried Hash before, you are in for a treat especially since you will be making it yourself and it cost you NOTHING That's the best part besides the hash itself.

Yeah Chief, I plan to hold off until I can get the trimmings from the last of the popcorn buds, then put it all together for a batch of ice hash. I'm going to chop the stems from the main colas into short pieces and add those in too (they felt sticky, so I think it will be worthwhile). It sounds like the hash is pretty strong smoke and a little will go a long way, huh? Thats good, cause I don't think I'm gona have enough trim to make a whole lot of it... -Mandi

Or you're confused and didn't read the whole thread. Any recent mention of my 'babies' going to veg until 7 or 8 weeks old pertains to my 'babies' that were born on Christmas and not the mature AK48s that you can see flowering heartily at the beginning of the thread. Those plants have now been harvested (except for the popcorn buds) and are drying and curing. -Mandi

Hey Manditroy, I would wait too to get all those frosty leave to make your hash and a good idea about cutting the stems up. I did not get a lot of hash but me and my fiance' really enjoyed the amount we did get A little does go a long way.

Here is a look at my three babies born on Christmas. I plan to veg them for another week and a half, until they reach 8 weeks. I figure I may as well get them as big as I can before switching them to flower, since I have a good sized closet for them to spread out. Bigger = more bud!

This is my Blue Mystic at just over 6 weeks veg. I'm really hoping for a girl, as I hear this is a great smoke. I'd like to eventually try crossing it with my AK48 to see what qualities that would produce.
This is the Short Rider at 6 weeks - the smallest of the trio. Looking much happier than my first attempt at this strain, which were both boys.
This is the new AK48 baby at 6 weeks - the biggest one, which has me hoping its not a boy. Its growing 4 colas rather nicely now.

Got another 46g dry weight from the smaller AK48 colas - still have a bit more coming soon from those popcorn buds, so I will probably top out at right about 4ozs total from both plants. Not too shabby for a newb with CFLs... Now that I know I have at least one other girl growing, I'm aiming to beat that 2oz per plant harvest this time around. -Mandi

Im a big fan of using HID lights for plants that are taller then a foot. If you give them enough light with the cfl's and T5's they shlould be ok. Just remember the more light you through at them during the flowring the better quality and denser bug you gonna get.

Congrats on your harvest! Have a similar setup, got 4 NL #5 on 3rd week of flower, using three 68w 2700k CFL, 4 42w 2700 CFL, hoping to get similar results to yours! I have been looking for a thread just like this, we basically are doing the same thing; indica plants, CFL, first time growing...haha I hope to match your 2 oz per plant, we'll see. Thanks nwaredstar7...I was quite happy with my results too, since I had no clue about growing until I joined RIU. I'm just trying to keep them green and perky all the way through this time, and so far its going well. I know I have at least one girl now anyway...I expect the other two to show sex soon.
