i think just breaking it up as much as you can, and to pack it well, but im sure theres veteran smokers who think different, teach me your ways...

I never went to any real effort to break it up - just lose more trichomes on fingers, etc. If you're rolling a joint, ya gotta break it up for even burn, smooth appearance, etc. Certainly I'd remove seeds, stems, but a nice tight nug should burn no problem.
That's what I like about a bong - load and shoot! No fuss, no muss.

I do the same thing. gotta have it nicely broken up to burn well, plus get to keep the keif for later use or pressing into cash... oops lol,

i find that if i place a nug in the bowl, it doesn't burn as well.
but when i use my grinder (put a stem plug at bottom so you dont suck any gear into the water) i get a nice clean burn because there is nice airflow and plenty of oxygen. sometimes you can just keep passing the bowl around w/o re-lighting it because it keeps barely lit.
and then when you run out of bud, you can pump up w/ some kief!

Don't buy the smallest shit your head shop has lying around. Get a decent one with a screen. You wont regret it.

Palm of your hand size... Screens are pretty pointless in my opinion. Whats the point of saving all the kif? Why not just top your bowl when you grind.

I agree with your size judgment. I like saving keef. It comes in handy when you meet up with an old friend or you want to plan a day like 4/20.
Some of my friends just love rolling blunts with a heavy keef to bud ratio, so they stash it.

not only is a grinder handy for saving your kief. but it also tells you how much resin is on the bud you just bought. I know i get pretty cranky if I grind some dry buds and dont' get any kief.

okay im still confused what kief is.... i smoke a bowl than i ash it, wheres the kief?
THC and other psychoactive chemicals are found in the resinous glands on the surface of the buds and leaves. On fresh buds they look like tiny crystals. Some of them become separated in the handling of the buds. When they collect (along with a tiny bit of other fragmented plant matter), they are collectively called 'kief'.

okay, i kinda got it. but i dont understand how a person can roll a blunt with just kief, how do you collect it? im guessing just grind it up and pick your choice....

After you grind the bud, you end up with little bits. But some of the crystals and hairs on the bud, which contain most of the THC / psychoactive compounds, fall off each time. At the bottom of your grinder is a screen and a tray to catch all the fine little pieces that fall through. That collection of trich crystals / hairs = kief.
