Every lightbulb used in a street light or parking lot light is an HPS or MH. That will never change. Incandescent light bulbs are being phased out for the CFL spiral lights. it's mostly for household domestic uses. HPS and MH will always be available for their powerful lighting abilities.

You need to think again. Where I am, the local power company is rebating manufacturing and commercial businesses to replace their lighting with T5 flourescents and LED....this includes LED replacement for parking lot and street level HID lighting. The LED replacements actually put out more usable light, usually have individual modules that can direct light to cover larger areas, and cost significantly less to run. They rebate enough to cover nearly 90% of the cost, and in some cases more. It's happing folks...HID is going the way of the dinosaur. It's not going totally away immediately, and won't be illegal, but fewer and fewer will be used, and eventually they will be selling less and less, driving up the cost to manufacture and the price. It may take 10-15 years, but HIDs are going to be used in decreasing numbers.

Know what's funny? Just about every state, and many power companies using bailout money, are subsidizing CFLs. The "daylight" CFL's just happen to be a perfect 6500K, and the "soft" CFLs happen to be a perfect 2700K. It's a gift.

O.K. This is sadly, one of the worst statements I have seen here. Nothing against you personally, but really, cmon. Everyone in the industry (and even alot of us common folk) KNOW that the days of the CFL are in fact, numbered. Why you ask?

Because ALL CFL's (yes, compact, full sized T-5's and every stinking one of them) contains the deadly element- MERCURY! Now before any of you that are in fact, I.Q. challenged start to question that, go ahead and Google search with these three words: cfl contain mercury
And feast your eyes on ALL the FACTS that relate to the quick rise and fall of the CFL.

History lesson for you-
1. The original incadescent bulbs that have been around since the days of Thomas Alva Edison are going away right now because they: break easy and are extremely poor when it comes to energy effeciency.
2. CFL bulbs are going away very soon, becuase they too: break easily and ALL of them endanger the environment in ways future generations are going to swear at us for.
3. LED bulbs are quickly becoming the future as they are very energy effecient, do NOT break easily AND they do not pollute the environment. Seriously, no contest.

I'm an entertainment lighting professional, and we too are in a state of limbo with LEDs. In my industry there are many huge advantages to LED's over conventional lighting, not too surprisingly which are shared by the growing community (power usage, heat, lamp life, etc..). Although some touring groups are now using leds as a replacement for conventionals, most venues are waiting for the cost to come down and the efficiency to go up before sinking $100k in a new lighting rig. We all talk about how great it would/will be, and in reality the switch is right around the corner. In 5 years, you will be seeing LEDs everywhere. I'll put good money on it, but I won't invest any money in it this year.

Actually this post was not my opinion and stemmed from
two comments I picked up related to the recent Oaksterdam raid.
I just found these statements interesting and wanted to share
with others here to get their take on this. At this point I'm neutral. I use
both HIDs/CFLs and have not tried LEDs yet.
LEDs replacing street lamps and such? Prices on HIDs might go up
due to less industrial/commercial applications? CFLs will go away
soon etc...?

They still manufacture them for industrial and commercial purposes which home depot is not a supply house for such applications... I work at real places like steel mills and power houses that use real shit that will never be phased out. This is my line of work. I think i should know what im talking abhout here. I go to big boy supply houses... F home depot and lowes... Those r for weekend wiremen... Try a real man's electrical/lighting supply house, and u will literally see the light...

yes, incandescents are being phased out. They aren't producing them like they were once before. Just go to a home depot or lowes, etc. And see for yourself. They will never stop producing them totally because they are also used to provide heat for reptiles and for spot or flood lighting among other uses. I just meant that for average household use they are going the way of the dodo or 35mm film.

You obviously haven't seen some of the new high end leds then.

I've done some big rock shows recently that have replaced their traditional arc-lamp style moving lights with powerful leds. The new shit is really quite amazing. It punches through nicely. You gotta pay to play however at this point. In 5 or 10 years the shit will be standard, and mass produced. LEDs solve many of our environmental problems in the future as well, including both power efficiency and reduction in waste.

And to the other intelligent people on here, regarding LED's the SolarStorm and UFO are some pretty badass LED's for growing... They are even using some crazy powerful LEDs at the POWERHOUSE I work at, in place of where they would use EITHER HPS's OR MH's, in past times, but are in no way phasing out HPS's, or MH's, as they STILL serve their intended purposes in those applications...

people are stupid ganja their always posting some knowit all shit like this every one here knows that no lighting source will become illegal or phase out since all these lights have different purposes and uses. and a great example in the improvement of HID is the CMH and MH t15. agrat example of the improvement of flouro is induction lighting, reptile ligthing aquarium lighting. cant really name any incandescent improvements but im sure there are some
