Skywalker OG, Hempy Bucket Grow, Area-51 LED's

MrED, Sounds like what the 2L folks could do, or the 5q pales would fit.... if it weren't perpectual, I'd say you could train 1 girl to fill a 2x2 Secret Jardin. I've got one for vegging pairs of plants.

I'm thinking somewhere around 3/4 of a gallon of root space, maybe a gallon with a lot of training. I'd love to have a cone shaped screen to train the plant around in a circle.
I could totally train a single girl to fill that space but I like variety. And perpetual makes harvest time less work. Ideally I'll be trimming 2-3oz every 2-3 weeks when I get the cycle going.

Hb, yeah that watering often thing came up with me too on several strains over the years...this SK OG is definitely one of them....but no, I can't really associate watering frequency to LED's...at least my pair of 180W jumbo's didn't cause it. It happened with the HID's to on occasion. Hope you didn't think I was knocking the 3-5g bucket thing...StevieStoner is a good example of a 5gal producer....I just thought it funny that someone would jump in for one post and say, you ought to do this, and you ought to do that...not knowing my rep with 2g's.

Why thank you for those kind words and that delicious looking recipe sir! IMO the 5g is a bit overkill for my setup because i just dont have space. Now im going with 3g and im already using (wasting) less water (nutes) then with the 5g so its probably saving me a few bucks too.

You are correct growing with soil, 5gal is in the mid size range for a container and if you want real big plants you'll need > 10gal. But with hempy think 3x the performance compared to soil (2gal hempy = 6gal soil) This is an aprox. and the smaller the container the greater the ratio. Many folks just can't grasp the concept that a system this easy to use can deliver the results it does.

Nearing the end of week 6...the smell has changed form earthy, musty citrus to "polecat"....when I open the tent now, skunk roars through the house...what a surprise attack....now's when you hope like hell your carbon filter is working.

ISK I'm not running a carbon filter for my setup and my plants hardly smell, and most of the smell is just the smell of vegetation. I was really fucking skeptical but it's been working for about a year now! If they start to smell it's a signal to me that something isn't quite right. The worst odors I get other than from harvest (they stop being happy for some reason) are from when I cut clones or top plants. But that just smells like vegetation.
Even if there was a smell I could blame it on the fact that I smoke like 2g a day!

Most plants that give off scents based on sex (like sinsemilla) do so to attract insects to help them get pollinated, not as a defense mechanism. There are some plants that stink to high hell to not get eaten. There are also plants to smell strongly to encourage their fruit being eaten so animals can spread their speed via defecation.

I would want to see supporting evidence to the cannabis smelling as a way to say "ouch", I doubt it exists.

I was going to buy a carbon filtre for my previous HPS grow (Early Wonder Skunk) as I was becoming super worried when the smell started to get strong..... but it was the "dwarfed dirt dweller" that was the little stinker, once she was harvested the smell was not bad at all (confirmed by visitors).

my indoor/sunshine grow is a single plant, I can't notice any smell as I typically have an ocean breeze that continually moves the air

I'm thinking my next will be "DNA Sharksbreath".... Jela mentioned he didn't need a carbon filtre as there was so little smell....I like that

I would say that the increase in odor is not reactionary due to trauma, rather the physical trauma itself breaking and disturbing plant cells. Much like rubbing a stem or leaf.

I have my cab in an office/spare bedroom in my basement. I keep the door to the room shut and run a scrubber in my cab setup. I sometimes notice a slight smell of ganja upon entering the room for the first time. If I'm in the room for any period of time the smell is not noticeable even with the cab open, but if I leave the room and come back...bam, loud as can be. So I agree there is definitely some acclimation that lessens noticing of the smell.

Strain choice is probably the biggest factor though. Fruity and spicy aromas seem to blend better and are not as noticeable. While IMO most "skunks" are of the fruity variety, a good skunk or cheese can and will usually overpower a scrubber. A good example is the Big Buddha blue cheese I grew. She smelled loud as hell from week 3 till harvest. The 3 I have going now? Barely any smell. I couldn't grow without a scrubber being in a multi-unit apartment but they certainly choke your vent cfm's off.

You can definitely see the Skywalkers coming along nicely Jela! I picture them in the dense swamps of Dagobah, toting Yoda around in a backpack.

None taken. The guy who watered my plants for me while I was on vacation commented that he though grows were supposed to smell. He smokes once in a blue moon. I can't offer any evidence but my own observations. Feel free to disagree.

Definitely agree, when you move the plant around the smell gets much more pronounced. I keep the smell under control using a DIY carbon scrubber and occasionally ONA gel when I need to work on the plant and have the door open (small cab). We entertain people often though, and I do not not want to advertise my grow even though its only one plant. I was concerned some time ago when I was walking through the neighborhood and caught the distinct smell of growing MJ, I thought it might have been mine so I invited a couple people I know to the house to see if they could smell from my house and no dice (good thing we had 50 people over the following weekend), it appears one of my neighbors is also growing

this is just awesome! I am just now "cloning for sex" my 11 plant soil grow so I can get a mother plant or 2 and you have definitely, thoroughly,100% convinced me to grow my future clones all "JellaHempy" style! (But with CFLs) Hell with my other hydro plans
Question tho... when I feed nutes, can I save and re-use the extra run-off that comes out the drain hole? If so any guesses on how many times?

Thanks for all the compliments folks. I have to tell you though that I'm a little disheartened with this strain. At 6 weeks these colas should be filling in...Their reaction to PK13/14 for the last week has been "more frost", not a fattening per say. I feared that all the super-cropping late in week 3 would affect them like it did "Crazy Miss Hyde" on my last grow. There are numerous tops here but there gonna mature about like you see them, maybe a little fatter, we'll see.
On the discussion of smell...yes DNA Sharksbreath was the lowest order of them all and I never even used the filter. But I can tell you that another low odor strain was G13 Pineapple Express....that didn't smell unless the plants were agitated and then it was so fruity you sniffed your fingers for the next 30 minutes. BTW that strain was my flagship grow in the 2g hempy buckets of mapito @ 4.7oz per plant...the smoke was so f_cking strong I gave it away..turned me schizo inside and out.

I'm sure it's a strain & pheno thing. And in the end if the smoke does what you need really well.......... you'll grow it again.

Thanks for the inspiration Watt's & Who.....it's still nothing that would hang out the end of Christmas stocking like your Bay11 will. Gonna watch horibleherk's grow for the same characteristics. His inside wisdom predicted "golf balls" which I have a lot of.

Stevie, they do produce heat like anything else would but at most 2° above ambient with a 160CFM exhaust fan at 60%. I took an IR gun and shot the temps over the heat sink areas with 89° at one end and 95° on the other (repeatable with each light). The fans are whisper quite and do a good job of keeping the heat-sink bled off without adding too much effect on the environment above them. The heat energy below from the LED's themselves can be felt by hand up to 12" away. They are way less heat-intrusive than my 400W HPS and an overall improvement over the 180W ProSource "Jumbos" I've used over the years in summer months. The snaps in the last post were my Pineapple Express grow as we were talking "smell" and lack of fill-in with the SK OG.
