So, in the event one party or the other is willing to allow a disaster to happen, they could come out being the savior to the
people and demonize the other side to gain and retain additional power.
Politics is rarely a shortsighted scenario, the happenings of today are based on deals long past.

side or the other not take advantage of it to further their agenda?
That's where you jumped off. Neither party is willing to let a disaster happen: ultimately the congress will approve an increase in the debt ceiling, and that part is inevitable. At that point, Obama would have to refuse to sign it. He won't. This is all political posturing.
