Forgot to address this, the tops are the biggest buds on the plant for sure. That's the part you see most of us posting in our pics cuz it's the prettiest and the biggest.

I think it's too late in the season to start topping, at 3ft and in September I gotta believe you're flowering already. Anything you do now may stress your plant. Most of the techniques I've read talk about topping and supercropping in Veg. If you're in flowering, IDK. If not flowering yet...

What does it smell like? (sorry for the dumb question but stink isn't a word I'd use to describe weed LOL) Does it smell of weed or something else? My carbon filter has a smell to it and it's not weed. My wife says it's a sweet smell but all I think of is antifreeze.

That looks like too much nutes to me, maybe some more info on your setup would be helpful. THe necrotic leaves suggest a build up so back off the nutes for a while, test your PH and go from there. One thing to remember about auto-flowering strains is that since they're driven by genetics more...
