I was lucky enough to be included in Dr Greenthumb's test grows for his new strain The Dope. I was late getting my seeds germed (full garden) and have purposefully not read any grow/smoke reports because I want the strain to show me what it wants, rather than going into the grow/cure/vap with pre conceived notions. I'm going to have fun at my own pace.
From the toppings, the stems range from 9" to 15".
.
This is going to be my first test grow with slightly different growing techniques, with the goal of yielding 4 litres of 4 week cured bud per bucket, 12 buckets under a 600 watt light and a light rail. The best yields I've had have been around 3.5 litres, but I'm flowering 14 strains in 12 buckets, with 11 more strains in veg, so I'm not dialled in for max yield on any strain. I just let the plants grow as they want for the most part, with a few changes I think I can up most strains I have to 4+ litres a bucket.
.
The first change is transplanting 2 plants from 6" pots into one 5 gallon bucket. I'm doing this for several reasons: reduced vegging time (I have lots of space and plants in veg) and a more dense root mass seem to be the two most important - the process is always trial and error but I've been having good luck with this on a few plants still in flower. I'm thinking that two smaller plants in the same space will be more efficient than one larger plant, but will be no more effort to tend.
.
I'm also going to let them veg in 5 gallon pots longer, to increase root mass. I usually transplant when the plants are long enough to bend around the buckets, about 4' of stem in total. If I let them veg too long after transplanting the branches end up too long and I've got 30" colas, sounds nice but it's a lot of work and not that much more bud than having some thick short colas. I'm going to transplant when the plants are short, and not train them CCOB. The stems will continue to grow, when they're long enough I'll train them and put the plant in flower when the branches are the length I want. I think this alone will increase yield, through a better root mass.
.
There are a few other changes I'll be making, I'm going to start making my own fertilizer and supplements as well, add them in slowly. I've got another 2 - 3 weeks of veg for this bucket, I'm looking forward to seeing the results.
