400w HPS question.

Hey guys it's my 1st time growing, I've dove a lot of homework on this. My question is with a 400w HPS light.

How many plants can I grow at one time & How many grams of dry bud would I be looking forward to?

Thanks in advance you guys are the greatest.

Figure on covering about 3' x 3', then decide how manmy plants you want to put in that area. Likely, it'll either be a couple bigger plants, or a handful of smaller ones. It all depends on how big they are.

Yield? For a first grow, you'll propbably end up with 2-3 ozs, as long as you don't have any major problems. That's about average, whether you use fewer bigger plants or more smaller ones.

I fit 9 ladies in three gallon buckets under a 400w light. (the buckets are about a foot across). So yep, like jawbrodt said, a 3 x 3 area.

Can you elaborate Bobby? I hear you get about 1 gram per watt or 0.5/watt. so I'm a bit confused. What's the differ from 150 HPS and 400 HPS. then.
well on this site people just exspect to get watt=weight but how much yeild a plant produces depends on loads of different things. c02 enrichment in the air during flowering, how much stress the plant is under, if its been topped, nutrient balance , the genetics of the plant itself, all different strains produce different yeild and a afghan kush under a 600w hps is goin to produce a different yeild to a blue widow under a 600w hps, how much red spectrum light the plant is exsposed to,the growing medium; aeroponics is much more efficent than soil grows, loads of factors all contribute to a different outcome, not something as easy as watt=weight

Oh okay I understand what you're saying now Bobby, Thanks a lot.

So if I have say about 3 plants under 400 HPS would I get the same buds if I just have 1 plant.

my advice to you as a fellow noob is dont be concerned with how much you yield from your first grow.
i started with 2 unknown bagseeds and 1hermied on me in week 4 of flower the other i harvested a week ago and approx dry weight looking around 35g using 1x600w hps for veg and flower.

use your first grow to learn. you will learn more from watching your plants grow. whilst doing research is fine you only truly know when you can practice .

so dont expect massive yields first time stay small to begin with hone your skills learn how to read what your plants are telling you they need. do this then you can start getting good yields.

hope this helped

Well put Jon, practice makes perfect.
Thanks a lot.

I'm also using a 400watt light and I use 3 gallon pots, but my space is more like 3.5x3.5 and I'm thinking it would light up a 4x4 space just perfect. I've been craming 6 plants under it, but thinking I might drop down to 4. While the pots are only a foot across the plants need room to breath and I think a 2x2 space for each plant is great. Just buy femenized seeds and start flowering when your shortest plant is about 12-15" tall. My first grow I got about an ounce per plant and my second I got 1.5-2 ounces per plant. Here is a shot of my current (3rd) grow. 3 midnight kush and 3 super lemon haze. Good Luck!

Yeah sounds about right. Thanks for the tip Brian!

I would put has many pots that you can under it has long has you go by the a gallon pot for every ft of growth. But you would get a ounce a plant min.And once you get to grips with the little tweeks neede to produce a good harvest i would aim for 2/3 ounce per plant that is 6 plant's directly under the light keep moveing them around so all get same light.Get a good feed advanced nutrients keep uping the ppm's and you may supprise your self........tyke.....................Always make's me smile knowing that another dealer may be out of work keep green post any questions and good luck dude............................................

Tyke, so you're saying if I have them in 6 Gallons they would grow 6 feet tall?

what he is saying is use a rule of 1 gallon for every foot of growth . eg if you veg for 4weeks and she is 15 inches tall you can be in a 1 gallon pot. but she will double or triple her size in flower so you would be expecting possibly 45inches of height so you would need triple the size 3 gallon to transplant into.

make sense?

I Totally understand. Depends on how big I want them to yield. So you saying the taller they are the more buds?

the taller they are the more nodes (branches) they will have which in turn means more bud sites . BUT!!!!!! your single 400w lamp will not fully penetrate the dense canopy which means low quality lower buds. i FIM or TOP my plants to promote a wider canopy on top. then 2weeks after i switch to 12 12 i clean everything off the plant from half way all the way down to soil level this also helps air circulation under the canopy.

Check my thread.

in here i have before and after pics of my cheese girls. also pics of harvest and a dry box setup if you need to make one

So how long should I wait before I start to flower them?
