If you live in Canada read this first. This provincial but most provinces are the same.
Out of the MNR regs
Snares cannot be used, except by the holder of a resident's small game license for taking varying hares north of the French and Mattawa rivers with a snare constructed of copper or brass wire between 22 and 24 gauge. the opening of the snare wire loop must be 10 cm (4 inches) or less in diameter. Licensed trappers may use snares under conditions specified in the trapping regulations.
Also
Snares in a patch would be considered traps by LEO and every Canadian that grows knows what that means.

I always build a "Natural" barrier around my grow area.. I'll cut down briars and use dead limbs to make a fence around it to where the animals can't get through. I believe in redundancy so I'll also make cages for my plants out of chicken wire or rabbit fencing. Once my plants get a few feet tall and the animals have plenty of food to eat.. usually around the middle of June, I won't have any problems with animals tearing up my plants. The bugs are a different story though. Good luck!
