"Area 51 LED" Information and discussion

The situation is still a bit fluid but it looks like the XP-L light is on hold for now unless there is a big improvement in availability in the supply chain. It's looking like the COB panel is going to be first with Vero 29's. Nothing is written in stone but it's looking like single COB units at 95 watts that can be used separately or up to 8 can be connected together for a total of 760 watts. They would also have removable reflectors for those with height restrictions and he may offer different spectrums, they have 2700k,3000k,3500k,4000k,5000k,5600k available from bridgelux.

Lets hear from the LED community on this design.

I would like to see a dimmer to make the unit even more versatile.
Connecting individual COB units is a cool idea, but are we talking about connecting via daisy chain plugs or are we talking about the ability to physically connect two units together at the heatsink or case?

Because for me, if it's just daisy chaining it, i'd rather have various sized COB panels than have to manage hanging 8 different units. But if it were something like the LEGO or Voltron version of a panel, then we're on to something. Let me connect the cases and just worry about hanging one unit rather than 8. Not sure if that is possible to engineer without weak-points at the connections but I would dig a design like that.

The panels are suppose to physically connect together to form a larger panel and daisy chain electrically.

all you would need is brackets to link each panel together into one large panel. Rather simple actually. Then just daisy chain each one to power them.

Does anyone know where I can find a video review of this light anywhere? Couldn't find one on youtube and I'm dying to see this light in action with all the love it gets on these forums. I know the diodes are of top quality but how is the whole unit itself? Does it have dimmable switches or anything like that? How is the veg lighting on its own?

Why did Jeff name the new small white light W-100 instead of a XGS-100? Seems that can cause confusion, like it's an entirely different light for which reviews aren't present, etc. If it retained the XGS prefix it would be like the two RW lights. It's clear with them that any review of the 150 applies to the 75 (in the sense of it being half an RW).

Thankfully, with Jeff's company, the reputation precedes any new model and will provide the W-100 with a positive foundation to be hoisted upon.

New never hurts. Undoubtedly a good call on his company's part.

Evidently, not: https://www.rollitup.org/t/area-51-w100-led.856626/

I'm still not understanding why the prefix change. If it's just "half an XGS-190" the change in model designation creates unnecessary confusion (notwithstanding how terrific A51 lights are, and model designations shouldn't mean anything, and I'd bear Jeff's baby if I could.).

I would imagine because all his new models are/were supposed to come out...no longer having the RW and XGS series....so call it waht it is...white. The new ones consisting of multiple reds, and the new one being the 660nm(just reiterating for new people). But wanted to keep a smaller panel around because of the success/demand. EH has always favored pure white over RW...and has said it many times. So I would infer that is the reason that it will remain...till eventually with success..his newer model takes over entirely.

Just what I think based on what has been said on here over time.

But just to be clear for new guys...the W100 is a 100w version of the XGS190...being exactly half of it inside and out....just like the RW75 was half the rw150.

Has anyone done any par readings for any of the lights? Any grow offs area 51 vs other led lights like solar storm, advanced, Hans etc? Links to any of this would be very helpful. I saw a side by side with onyx and a51 won handily. Thanks...

Hey greengenes are you saying that the rw and xgs models are being discontinued? Any word on any of the new lights coming out? Anybody?

^^^It's really, really expensive to do something like that and unless one of the big cannabis mags does an honest grow-off (doubtful) you'll have to wait 10 to 20 years for Consumer Reports to start doing it. An enterprising individual could start a magazine to try to get their hands on equipment just like Legs McNeil did back in the early punk days to get free records and tickets. You just actually have to start some kind of magazine. Otherwise there are other sites that aren't so A51 centered and have individuals who buy all different equipment, just not doing grow-offs.

New A51s don't have any release date and there is some question as to what it will be from what I've heard.

Thanks Fran. N yea makes a lot of sense. Was planning on buying 2 rw 150 next month. Maybe I'll wait to see what New lights come out before this
ppurchase.
