Aussie Growers Thread

'Dunno what you're doing to get such a good germination rate? I've soaked a heap of seeds recently & whilst they popped initially, once I got them into Jiffy's, they just don't go anywhere.

I'm wondering whether we (in Aus.) get sent old seeds at the end of the Northern Hemisphere season. The only ones that have properly taken-off for me have been fresh home-made ones or ones swapped with other folks on here.

That or else I'm a complete plonker & doing something fundamentally wrong......:dunce:
I generally get 90% germination

Yep, my initial germination rate is similarly fine (ie. they pop), it's just once I transfer the ones that pop into Jiffy's, not a lot of them make it above the surface. I had 4/5 HSO Blue Dreams pop, but not one of the 4 showed their head above the surface.
keep em in the fridge
Yep, that's where I keep all my seeds & without a word of a lie, I've had seeds I picked-up in Zimbabwe in '92 crack after a 24hr soak. Just won't take-off from there.:wall:

Kinda frustrating when you spend good $'s on reputable breeder's products & then they don't perform as expected. I can only conclude that it's something I'm doing wrong. Just soak them between 2 damp "Swispers" pads in Asian sauce dishes & transfer to jiffy's once they pop.

I'll have to try the H2O2 bathing & some myco innoculant in the Jiffy's, but since I can't compare techniques with the same seeds, it's a bit of a random.....

Initially completely soaked, then I squeeze as much out of them as I can to just leave them damp (ie. nothing more comes out before I transfer to them).

Maybe I'm putting them too deep (5mm-ish)?

I put the jiffy's into a humidome on top of a heat pad (at this time of year), insulated with a couple of layers of cardboard underneath soas not to "cook" them.

Some work fine with that regime, some don't.

Edit: Carolina Reapers, Naga Vipers & Habanero's are suffering the same fate right now.......

Sounds like they are damping off which is caused by pathogens

I never soak them or do the paper towel thing, just put em straight into cubes, this time i used coco in cups and into the humidome as u do with a heat mat, I just dont like fucking with them.
If they are viable they will come up.

Seeds don't need humidity like cuttings do, all high humidity will do is encourage fungal pathogens
Exactly, dry for seeds, wet for clones. Plus keep the light close for seedlings as more stretching makes them more susceptible to damping off
Thanks, guys. I'm starting to see the error of my ways & will look further into it.

It would appear that "wet" is definitely advantageous when it comes to the ladies, but only "slightly moist" when it comes to seed germination.....

Either that or he’ll grow a little 1.7T excavator. Handy little machines they are.
1 tonne wacker neuson 803
I have one since new. Condenses down to fit through a house door. Same engine and hydraulic as a 2.5 tonne. Will drill down in heavy clay and pull out 2.2m deep. Digs to 1.8m deep with bucket. Runs on less t hgan 10lt diesel a day.
