Back at it again! New homemade LED light - 235w version!

hey guys,

Slix here again back from the dead. wow its changed in the LED scene now, doesnt seem to be about power saving anymore :P I had no idea that there was a seperate forum for it! might need to see if I can get my homemade light thread moved here
.

Anyway..

I got bored last week and built another LED light. This one consumes 235w and I have 450nm Blues, 630nm Red and 660nm Red and 2 3000K warm white 3w modules. I had 2 designs in mind, see below images:



So then I got building..

The metal alu plate the LEDs are mounted on is 600x300x3mm

the panel chassis is 0.8mm alu.

3 x 120mm adjustable PWM controlled cooling fans

Got a chassis made up at my local metal shop. and started building the light and wiring. Had pics of the build during production but unfortunately all I have is the finished product and the results.



I used existing LEDs from my previous supplier and bought eBay 680mA LED drivers that drive 18 LEDs in series. she is sure bright. time to see the results.. coming soon.

Awesome diy led panel. Read in another thread the lens angles are 120 degrees, but what are the names (brand/model#) of the leds you chose?

I buy my LEDs from Sealand opto electronics in China.

I use 2 x 1.5w dies in my designs as they produce a greater PAR than single dies.

Davemedinis, The LED die is mounted on the star shaped mini PCBs. I like to mount the LEDs this way because I can easily change dies (faulty ones or change spectrum) by simply desoldering the old LED.

I use cheap chinese 680mA constant current sources because they are.. well cheap ($15 ea on eBay).. I know it doesnt make a hell of a difference with these type of drivers as to what brand they are.

Its a shame i lost the photos of the build process i quite geniously mounted the drivers inside their own heatsink and mounted the 2 larger heat sinks as per the initial diagram. everything fit together well actually, i have exactly 5mm of clearance between fans and heat sinks and 10mm space between heatsinks.

I will have to give her a trial run to see if my curent design will speed up veg time having a slightly higher saturation of blue 450nm.

Id be interested in seeing you do another DIY thread if you make another light. I have kicked around doing a led build myself but I always stopped due to not knowing enough on the drivers part.Nicely done

Haha, I have since changed other halves and she is ALOT more understanding. Hell we even smoke together this time :D

I have been considering getting some designer genetics this time but I germed a few bag seeds and one of them looks like a pretty racey sativa (my favourite)

So,thanks, dear Slixxor. Could we know your diodes size, input voltage at Red and White, and you are running them at 680mA, but most of the LED panels are run at 1W 300-350mA and 3W 580-630mA in the USA. Some says higher them 630mA current, the diodes could be run very hard.
Would like to know more about your DIY job.

Haha I get asked that ALOT. And frankly I sell them for ALOT. I pay $92 to have the chassis made up and then $25 for the 3mm plate. Here's my LED pricing from my supplier:

1.660nm,price for samples is 1.65USD/PCS,1.4USD/PCS for 1000pcs.

2.630nm,price for samples is 1.15USD/PCS,1USD/PCS for 1000pcs.

3.950nm,price for samples is 1.65USD/PCS,1.3USD/PCS for 1000pcs.

4.450nm,price for samples is 1.15USD/PCS,1USD/PCS for 1000pcs.

5.420nm,price for samples is 4.1USD/PCS,2.9USD/PCS for 1000pcs.

6.395nm,price for samples is 4.1USD/PCS,2.9USD/PCS for 1000pcs.

7.6500K white,price for samples is 1.15USD/PCS,1USD/PCS for 1000pcs.

The controllers are $15 each. Extra accessories + cable = $30

I would say around $500 lol

Davemedinis 3w LEDs can be run at 700ma nominal. The controllers have a 240v input. The output voltage is dictated by the current limiting transistors.

Guys, thought I'd mention... I ran the panel for 8 hrs in the cab. The panel stays extremely cool with fans at half speed +2 degrees C from ambient. Think I'm on a winner :)

Haha indeed. Waiting on a couple of clones from a friend. His is primarily sativa dominant so it will be a challenging test. I can predict sensational results during veg but my blue ratio is slightly higher so flower MAY be a slow and unfruitful venture :p

Is it possible to use multi-color LEDs? (red, green, blue) It would be pretty awesome to move a dial and go from predominantly blue spectrum to predominantly red spectrum lighting. And maybe very dim green for 'night' work.

AdvancedNewbie, I have looked into getting something similar to a Cree mc-e module with 4x3w dies built into on led in parallel. My next design (if funds and time permits) will have an arduino UNO with LCD and function keys and a D15 socket that will allow me to:

- Set lighting schedule
- monitor and control PH
- adjust light spectrum accordingly (flower/veg/clone)
- regulate and control ventilation
- supply water + nutrients (I can't think of a cheap way of doing this though)
- supply diagnostic 2.4ghz data to a leostick USB arduino board dongle.

I know I am pigeon holing myself by building this into the actual light itself but if I pull it off I can remake it as a standalone system.
