June Lake ?
My family left Alaska prior to the earthquake, don't know exactly when. We ended up in FT Huachuca in Arizona. What a shithole.I used to guide for Brown Bears here frequently - the big quake of 1964 caused the huge slide from the mountain top into the bottom of the valley.
Beautiful country but very steep & rough!

The CG sent me to St. Louis after 9 years in Alaska & after 3 years of way too many people and the craziness that accompanied that I dipped & went home!Gotta love the Army.
We bid on a house a little south of there in Hereford a few years back. It was out in the country close to the mountains. The logic was cheap medical and dental right across the border when we retire. The way the border is now you can forget about that for a while. My family left Alaska prior to the earthquake, don't know exactly when. We ended up in FT Huachuca in Arizona. What a shithole.
And it's really hard to piss off a Canadian. We bid on a house a little south of there in Hereford a few years back. It was out in the country close to the mountains. Three of us Canadians were in Richardson TX in the early 90s for some synchronous optical network training when the instructor asked what the difference between us may be. Without thinking, I blurted out "sense of humor". He remained stoic, somewhat proving my point. Stonecold, emotionless professionalism was his speed. Imagining drill Sargent. I did learn the word nitwit that day though. When some of the concepts he was teaching weren't resonating, he quipped that "even a blind pig can find an acorn in a haystack." Weaksauce! If only he had had as much fun as I did the night before, he may have lowered his expectations. And it's really hard to piss off a Canadian.
My grandparents made sure to set up retirement in a dry county to discourage my uncles from drinking. Within 30 minutes of moving in my uncles knew within a 1/4 mile where the closest liquor store was.Three of us Canadians were in Richardson TX in the early 90s for some synchronous optical network training when the instructor asked what the difference between us may be. We were in a dry county (never heard of one before then) so we made a road trip for some drinks. At the checkout, I was asked "paper or plastic?" Never been asked that before, so had no clue what it meant. Told them I had cash. Derp - it was for the packaging. Discovered buttery nipples (the drink) during this trip and ate lots of deep frid alligator. Also attended a huge country bar and visited the Grassy Knoll.
The instructor took us to this great BBQ place - it was beautiful!
