Saw this story this morning. I'm a little older than you I think, but our lives may overlap in certain ways. Enjoy this gift article about a special time and place.
I went to a couple punk shows there as youngster. My son is into EDM and saw a show there last year. That neighborhood used to be much sketchier in the 70s and 80s. Anything past 14th street heading towards NE was where things got interesting. Lots of changes in that area over the years.

I lived blocks away in sketchtown lol and was a regular there and DC space late 70s and through the mid 90s when I moved to BFE. People don't know how crucial DC was for a lot of music. Bluegrass to punk, DC was awesome.

We would see college kids, watch the crackheads single them out to roll them on the way to their car.
They didn't belong there and were scared, crackheads could see that fear. They knew better than bothering one of us.

Eastern Market area is pretty fun now, good place to go drinking.

DC space was the funnest, weirdest place. I used to bring people from the VA 'burbs there, watch em freak out.

I used to go to the Florida Ave market every year to get crates of mistletoe from the florist wholesale place. I'd put a little snip of mistletoe with a ribbon on it and sell them door to door and out in front of church on Sunday. I'd make about 300 bucks a crate which was pretty good considering my job at the supermarket paid $3.35 an hour and I had to pay union dues each paycheck. We lived in SW near the wharf area as a kid and then moved to the burbs in NW.

I saw Parliament Funkadelic as a young kid with my older cousins at the Armory. You could smell the weed and PCP smoke everywhere. It was my introduction to the fact that my cousin's smoked weed. In the 80s we had gogo music shows at my HS and Rare Essence and Trouble Funk played, used to be huge in the DC scene.

I worked near L'enfant plaza so we would go down to the fish market and get some fried stuff for lunch. I hear a lot of that has been shut down in battles with developers
My dad worked at 20th and K NW so I spent a good bit of time downtown as a kid. I worked for a law firm on Dupont Circle and the US Senate for a few years. I just got tired of that pace of living as well as the cost of everything. All my family still lives in the city or in the MD suburbs so I like visiting but just for short visits. I've gotten used to the quiet of the mountains and big cities are just too loud and busy.

I've never been down there, it never had a draw for me. But I've seen some shit local punk bands when I was a kid in nj. Fun times lol
My buddy used to drive up to the bar Bruce Springsteen liked to drop in and play at in NJ. Him and his brother actually got to see him play there which was pretty cool. It was called the White pony or something pony, my memory of that time period is way fuzzy.

I saw George Thorogood play at the Childe Harold in Dupont Circle right before he broke out, maybe 1977. He was a wild man jamming on people's tabletops. Next time I saw him a few years later he was opening for the Stones in Hampton Coliseum on Keith Richard's 40th birthday.

I drove on 495? to go to a funeral in Virginia years ago. That was the closest that I ever want to get to DC. My wife being an immigrant has always wanted to see it. So she went last Spring with some girlfriends to see blossoms or something. She liked it. They went to some cool space or flight museum too. I still don't want to go.

Saw George Clinton and Pfunk up in Burlington, VT whilst visiting a buddy in culinary school years ago. It was a dope show.

I got lost in a really bad DC neighborhood just blocks from the capitol in my early 20's....Got chased out of there and I was scared shitless...We were trying to do some sight seeing. I remember we saw a sign for I-95 and we said lets get the fuck outta here! Never been back!
