Buddies, side-light and under-canopy LEDs

I have two strings of PC Red Buddies and a Meanwell HDR-30-24 on order.

No idea when they'll arrive - with all the Corona Chaos in the world right now, patience is key - but I'll try to remember to post up some pics in this thread once I get everything set up.

Props to Teknik and GLA for making this product available. I've been toying with the idea of some extra red for a long time, and the Buddies are exactly what I needed to get my ass moving.

I've got tracking numbers for you guys. They came through today. I can only apologise for the delay, but there's not much we can do about freight these days as it's a bit of a nightmare getting stuff out of China.

@Grow Lights Australia the Buddies arrived yesterday, just two days after I was notified of shipment from Hong Kong. Damn quick. Nice.

The driver arrived last week, but I seem to have misplaced my wagos (or perhaps the wife did some "cleaning up"), so I'm waiting on Prime shipping to deliver some. In the meantime I need to work on precisely how I'm going to integrate the two strips into my pre-existing fixture. Fun stuff!

This is a bit frustrating for us and goes to show just how erratic freight out of China is these days. Your shipment was lodged at the same time as the others and they should have gone out together, but for reasons only DHL knows, the others have arrived and yours is still stuck in Hong Kong. We are chasing this up and will let you know as soon as we find out. I can only apologise in the mean time. In future, Buddies shipments will come to us first and will be dispatched from Australia, where we have a bit more control over shipping. I have sent you an email. If we don't have a satisfactory answer by early next week, we will send you another shipment. I have enough Buddies here to cover your order and will dispatch them myself.

No worries I knew shipping would be hectic I know it’s out of your control. Kind of nice to know that it was indeed dropped off with the others but at the same time not since the tracking still says it hasn’t been received it. I’ll see if I can contact DHL and see what the deal is but I think I may have to wait until Monday to talk to them. Awesome thanks

LED Teknik just provided a bit more of a detailed answer for me to pass on.

They are a custom-made 5050 LED specifically for horticulture and the same chips Teknik provides to Cutter for his 5050 BR strips. Teknik has his own packaging companies that he uses to make things for him and the LEDs have the same base components as Cree and Lumileds 5050 LEDs provided by Sanan. The only difference is Teknik uses custom phosphors. He says the main brands don't make specific horticulture spectrums, so he has them custom made.

I can answer that. Positive goes to positive, negative goes to negative. That's it. You can connect two Buddies together by joining the + and – wires to each other, and then the free + and – wires of one of the Buddies to the driver.

If you wish to connect four Buddies to one driver, you can either connect all four the same as above and loop the remaining + and – wires back to the driver (like a snake eating its tail), or you can connect the driver to two Wagos, and then connect the Buddies to the corresponding + and – Wagos.

Just remember, you can connect two Buddies to each other with one end connected to the driver, but you cannot connect four Buddies to each other unless you loop the remaining end back to the driver. Otherwise there will be voltage drop from the first to second to the third to the fourth Buddy in the string, and the LEDs will be dimmer by the time the current gets to the third and fourth Buddy. However, if you loop the remaining end back to the driver, you will not get the same voltage drop, because the driver will be sending current down each end.

Like this (D = driver, B = Buddy, + = positive wire, – = negative wire)
