PF tek all the way. its not complicated at all, just a series of steps you follow. Go to youtube and search for the video "Lets grow mushrooms!" its about an hour long and shows everything you need to do.

Cheapest way? Buy a spore syringe, find some horse manure, inject and pray. :D

Everyone is going to tell you pf tek bro. It's about as easy as it gets. Having just gotten into this hobby about 3 months ago I would say getting use to the new terms and jargon is one of the hardest parts. The other thing is understanding the life cycle of fungi. As most of us know, they are neither plant nor animal, so a lot of our assumptions about how life propagates doesn't necessarily apply to fungi. Having taken a few biology courses gave me a slight advantage, but not much. My professor did his dissertation on fungi, so naturally he interjected as much about it as possible into his lectures. On a side note, anyone looking to get into biology should consider focuses on fungi. We know so little about them there is a lifetime of research for anyone willing to take it on.

Personally, I've cruised most of the mushroom communities online. All of them abundant with information and for the most part full of helpful people, but I like mycotopia the best. One of the things that initially caught my attention was that anytime someone uses an important myco term, it is automatically linked with a brief explanation of that term.

Cheapest grow is on whole corn or popcorn kernels.
Boil them till they are wet all through (break some open to check how far they are, as it boils)
Jar and sterilise.
Innoculate.
When done put 1/2" verm in bottom of icecream tub, break corn up and make a nice even layer over the verm, top off with another 1/2" verm.
Mist top verm layer till well moist.
Place in fruiting chamber, TADAAAA!!!!!!!!!

yep thats right, they might not get as big as ones grown on pooh but you are dealing with like 50% of the timespan.
I've gone from spore to harvest in 26 days.

could you use the popcorn kernals that dont pop in a bag of popcorn, washed and sterilized of course, or would they be slightly cooked and no good then?

PF Tek all the way you could spend under a hundred bucks at walmart, just make sure you get reliable spores.

Sounds interesting. I'm guessing you would need to use a PC right? From what I understand, a big pot with water doesn't work too well with grains.

Check craigslist or a pawnshop, an old PC works just as well as a new one, in fact i prefer my 1978 Tedelex to a brand new Prestige.
