Wouldn't the T5s effectivness be hindered greatly by the distance needed for the HPS though? seems like a waste to me imo
two 150 watt HPS don't put off nearly as much heat as 1 400 watt. not to mention lumens are measured from a distance of 1 ft away from the source of the light. These t5 guys are used to hanging their lights 3-6 inches above canopy, so they are getting way more light than what the lamp puts out in lumens. Remember inverse square law 420px-Inverse_square_law.svg.pngAlso if you are running V-HO bulbs on an HO ballast you'll get higher luminosity then through the HO bulbs

Hello everybody read this whole thread and I have a few questions I have one 4' 8 tube on top and two 6 tubes on the sides with six plants useing all 6400k bulbs for veg and thinking all 2700k bulbs for flower is this the right combo? here is a pic of what i have 3 weeks in

Bigb999999,
Any lamp you'll use will work. But if you really want to see some good growth add actinics. you can find this bulb and many more like it at your local pet supply store A0WG_1_20120117_1235494.jpg

Mursh I tried the actinic route for veg, but it did not do for me. Plants were stagnant. Within 24 hours of replacing it with Quantum Grow bulb the plant growth took off.

Temps with just lights on about 92 deg. I run air cond. temps steady 74/78 have a fan blowing top of canopy just not seen in pic. think i have enough lights 100,000 lumens

The Quantum bulbs are just fantastic across the board. I don't care what anyone says about their spectrum. Great for Veg and Great for Bloom

Did the growth completely stop? I have noticed a slower Veg growth also but it works better in my perpetual situation. (timing) Growth overall does look better than with straight 6500's but a little slower for me. Where are you guys getting the Quantum bulbs?

I noticed that the actinic bulbs are good for but only for Daria dominant strains it works well for ten to keep them at a lower height with the indica strains Im currently using one for flower in my 8 bulb and it seems to be keeping the one cola that is underneath it has way tighter nodes than the another cola on the same plant under a 2700k so I would only recommend the
For satin as, but I think using those bulbs only would work on certain strains

But this is all my opinion

I agree that different strains have different needs and will have different absorption rates. That is why I try to use indica dominant strains that tend to be stout and bushy in nature. Using the actinics not only slowed down my growth but it does appear to be healthier. The only thing I have changed in my system from the last run was the bulbs and pots. The pots really made a difference later in Flowering but not in Veg. I ran Skywalker OG once under T5 and it will be the last time. It was a great strain and came out ok, but it took over with too much stretch. Was very hard to maximize the limited light footprint.

What is Daria Dominant?

Yes growth was at a stand still for a week. My cross appears to be Indica Dom

I bought mine when I bought the BB. Google them to find closest source to you.

LV I agree about the Quantum bulbs, but will supplement the 2900s with Coral Wave + Red Lifes + Flora Suns + one 660 (Jeff is sending me one- yeah!)

Here's a couple pics. First 2 are from my HPA rig. Plants are ~ 9" tall.

Next two are my 21st Century F & D using APs + lava rock (~ 1 hour feed cycles). The first F & D pic was taken a week ago. The smallest one died, but the other has quadrupled in size. The larger plant in the back is from my HPA rig. Moved it from HPA due to too many plants in too tight a space for roots to get proper atomized mist coverage. See root pics: Note the abundance of tiny roots + root hairs, which are tinier still- like pipe cleaner fuzzies.

When the root environment is dialed in (almost there) the entire root mass will be covered with root hairs, which is the most efficient to feed the plant. The F & D roots will not look this complex.
