you need a way to measure the c02 and release it when it needs it, so you'll need a c 02 controller, check out sentinel or titan

As VICTORYGARDEN said you need a way to measure current co2 levels and induce the regulator when required.

I realize that for some people this would be impracticle but our prime choice for co2 is propane lanterns. These can give off large volumes of co2. Sometimes when I'm pressed I'll break out the briquet hitachi barbecue and cover it with a filter to keep down the soot. The best indoor I had I used propane and a woodstove for co2. Evertime I'd open the woodstove large amounts of smoke would be sucked into the op. The colas were almost as long as an average coffee table. Other people who have come and gone have tried cylinder co2 but in all practicality it doesn't cut the mustered. How many cylinders of co2 do you think you'll need? I could understand something like that if you were going to airate the res with it for water times but I'd have to see some proof that there is any value to such a system.
Lanterns, flames, hibachis all seem like a good idea until your house burns down. Use a special CO2 generator if you don't want to worry. CO2 tanks work well for small confined areas, but for bigger areas a generator is the way to go. Once you have the regulator hooked up tyou need to connect it all to a release solenoid, just time the solenoid to go off at the correct intervals to create a 1600PPM CO2 environment. A proper CO2 meter isn't cheap.

Our ops have been going with "Lanterns, flames, hibachis"
for 21 years without a single incident. If it's installed properly there's no danger. That's why I say, it's not for everyone.
You said it was impractical, you should have made your disclaimer earlier.
