Connecting PC fan directly to power cord

I saw someone on the forum attach a PC fan directly to a power cord versus a PC power source. How is this done, a pic or two would be cool....

My first attempt resulted in sparks, ozone and a fucked up fan

And I wasn't even stoned....

it's there you just have to search for it, i saw it the other day and preety sure you can use a phone chrger(12V) cut the ends and attach the two wires two your fan. one way will cause it to turn, the other wont do a thing.

take a 9 volt battery that charges a cell phone

cut the cord and seperate the 2 wires inside of it

take the computer fan and cut off the end of the wire part you'd connect to the computer power, all you need is the red and black wires

connected the red wire of the computer fan to the red wire of the 9v, and the black to the black

then tape it off and plug it in

if that doesn't make sense then pm me and i can explain it better

You can't use AC power to run a fan; the current needs to be constant and not going positive to negative. You NEED a DC source for power so you need either a PC power supply or any other source of ~12v DC.

If u have any kind of dc wall charger, it should work for a pc fan, as long as it doesnt go over 12 v. i have an old printer wall plug that puts out 36 v, lol, burn fan up.

Im not sure about the fan....but i do know all wall chargers, wall adapters...have their power rating wrote on the side of the black box that plugs in wall. If you could match up the numbers off of fan to a certain charger with the same volts and mA, would give u optimum usage out of fan. An old nintendo or super nintendo power cord would probably work also.

Other than that, i believe they make dc power supply, I havent bought one in over 10 years, but i think it costed me around 25 bucks. I dunno bout now.

i still have the 3 wires attached 2 it and the thing at the end of the 3 wires can i connect it any easyer way?

you should run pc fans using 12v power adaptors.

all pc fans will have a mA rating on them
all 12v power adaptors will have a mA rating too.

make sure your fans mA is not greater than the mA of the power adaptor connect red pc fan wire to positive on adaptor black to negative and hay presto it works.

some pc fans come with 4 wires.
positive
negative
sensor
speed

the speed wire can be wired up too in order for the fan to run at a lower CFM.

listen to jondamon you know what he is talking about
most cell phone chargers nowadays use 5 volts old ones where 9
use the 12 volt thats what the fan is made to run on use a lower voltage fan will not turn as fast as 12 volts
