Curing issues and troubleshooting (some bud rot)

We weren't sure if this should be here or over at the Harvest & Curing forum. Anyways here's our [current] problem.

We let our buds hang dry for around 4-5 days. The non-sugar fan leaf was removed before the hanging. When the buds were removed at around day 4-5 the outer leaves felt crunchy and smaller stems did snap so we thought the buds were ready for curing.

So they were dry trimmed and into mason jars the buds went.

Next day they were given a couple long periods where the top was open and the buds were moved around. They didn't feel wet to us so we didn't put them out for further drying.

Day 2 of the jar curing, we found that one bud had a pinky nail size mold fuzz. The bud was cut open and the generous portion was removed.

Now the buds have been out on a tray in a room that is likely 60's temp and mid 40% RH. The tent is reading 39% so the rest of the room may be higher.

Some stems are snapping others are just bending. And the outer leaves are starting to become brittle when we handle the buds. And all of the bud smell like regular outdoors now. The fruity smell is gone. The bud is Northern Lights.

We can't really tell if they are ready for jars yet. Feeling like we wasted a plant this week.. Any help here would be great.

They will sweat in the jars if too moist in the middle. It would really help you out if you had a hygrometer in at least one jar. Don't mix the buds from the moldy jar with others. Buds with stems that snap should be fine, let the rest dry more, try 3_4 hours on newspaper. Back into jars and this it's where the hygrometer comes in handy. Get rid of the moldy buds. Don't cut the mold off, it will come back once you jar it again.

My method, and this works in dry to humid climates. Dry three days, jar, let sit about four hours they will sweat, dump out on newspaper for four hours, back in jars to sweat overnight or 8 hours, check hygrometer if above 65% dump again. This continues until you're at 65% or below. Once your at 65% slow it down burping twice a day, the amount of time they're open depends on the humidity in the jars and the rh if your environment. At 62% add boveda packs and burp/mix the buds around at least once a week.

We agree with you about the hygrometer. Also we basically put the buds in the jar at least 2 days too early.

Going into the overnight jar period. They are not packed in and the buds are easily moving about without forming a single huge nugget.

Wish us luck.

Good luck, if you burp a jar that's suspect of mold do it last, and in another area.

Going through the buds this morning. Haven't found any cases of mold. We're going to let them have 2 hours of tray time today, and then jar again.

This will let us have a better view of the buds.

Cautiously optimistic about their outlook. Also the delicious smell came back after being in jars for 10 hours.
