Hello Dat Boi and welcome to RIU....

You asked a most perplexing question....

That debate has been known to cause e-fights, bans, bloody lips and bigger yields. :)

YES, you can indeed open up your plant to air flow, light, and happiness. Indicas tend to be real leafy, which is fine when the plant is grown outdoors where Mother Nature designed her.... HOWEVER, when we grow INDOORS, it is OK to remove leaves as needed. Just remember leaves contribute to the plant's energy. You should make sure that removing a leaf exposes another leaf, or a bud site, before removing it.

I remove leaves to improve air flow, allow light into the middle of the plant and to increase my yields. I also cut off all sucklings and most fan leaves, two nodes from tip on back to main stem.

dont trim them unless they are damaged. then trim just the damaged stuff. youll stress the plant and it may herm on you or die all together, thats the leaves that store all the nutrients for your plant and convert it to energy. just an opinion. everyone has one but mines been successful.

I'm going to politely disagree with your contention that removing fan leaves will cause a plant to die. I spent 15 years as a licensed landscape designer and installer. Selectively pruning, or thinning out a plant will not kill it. You also are not going to cause a plant to change sex simply because you plucked some leaves. I grow using a ScrOG technique and I remove a lot of leaves. I've never killed a plant nor have I caused one to go male. You are simply repeating the old mantra that you have read on here elsewhere.

Since you've never removed leaves before, next time you have a plant about 2-3 weeks into flowering, look carefully at lower branches and their nodes. You should spot flowers forming. Most won't be worth trying to do anything with, but look for sites that have potential. If you are growing Indica plants as natural bushes indoors, you are only harvesting about half of what you could be.

I trim and don't think twice about it. As long as a shoot has grown from the node and established itself, the fan leaf can go. I veg to produce bud sites not a leafy ass shade tree. People who preach that whole "solar panel" bullshit can shove it up their ass IMO.

I like to remind them that I'm not growing under the sun. My light isn't getting through... And you'll notice that most of the leaf preachers don't even ask "sativa or Indica?" they have the same answer for all situations whether indoor and out, and that is, "don't touch that leaf"

LOL, Nice read.... I think I've done a better job explaining leaf removal than that article. I'm going to need to do a Journal entry on defoliation. That article did mention the points I always hit on, growing inside, not outdoors, leave last two nodes alone, improves air flow, increases yield, yada yada... blah blah.. ;)
It seems like people are more likely to believe information from a nicely made out page like the one I posted over peoples experience of a forum, no matter how much they have.

I completely agree with you and have tried arguing some of the points myself, it all depends on the situation and no grow is the same.

I take everyones advice and I do my research and based on that, thats how I decide my next move.growing is labor intensive and not cheap by no means.I'm not gonna chop away at my plants just because says its a good idea.thank god for RIU and all the truly exp3rienced growers out there.thanks for the tips

as i said...opinion. and yes i have trimed my fans before as i said it works better for me not to do so. i believe in that process called photosythesis. my opinion once again. i think it was best stated as no two grows are the same. my room is huge and my girls have room to do as they wish. some grow from experience and some even landscape? but every one is different.

Some even grow from experience AND landscape for a living... You are right though, to each his own. At least you aren't claiming pulling off a leaf will hermie a plant or kill it or anything...

Oh wait, but you did..... lol

i'd recommend you experiment with a couple of the plants. then you can see for yourself.

@ OP
I would have to say I follow Serapis's philosophy on foliage trimming on this one. Each plant is unique though so one has to always use disgression with trimming.

@ Dat
I think I see nads.
