called a duct muffler
http://www.amazon.com/Lighthouse-Hydro-Muffler-Hydroponics-Silencer/dp/B00C5RRG4Y

the other part is u can get a box from post office and incase the fan then use those cheap bed topper from walmart (u know the egg shell crate one) and incase that in the box to dampen sound

your only issuse is heat ,,,,,,,,,,,,,booster fans are 120-130 degrees and then they will cut out so by u incasing it the heat does not bleed off as effective so will build up

if u get one of those wired thermometers u can place the outside senor by the fan and keep a eye on it

your... BOOSTER fan is loud? your 240cfm (when used in-line w/ a high cfm fan pushing it) is loud?

Replace it, the bearings are obviously going out, n they are like what, $22?

How does the muffler go over the fan?
it does not go over the fan

it get attached to the fan ...........before the fan and after the fan ................it will reduce the sound the fan makes and keep it from echoing down the ducting

to stop the noise from the fan u need to incase it with the foam like i said

perhaps its time for liquid cooling? Seriously, a 6" booster fan on its own pushes AT BEST 160cfm... its what "booster" fans are designed to do. 160 free air movement, 240 pass thru w/ a real fan at one end....

So at 160cfm thru a 6" tunnel.... what is the god awful noise your hearing if it's not mechanical? Maybe you got the wrong brand n its got a loud motor or something? I just can't imagine this amount of air movement, or this small and low power of a fan is producing noise to a level of irritation...

Also... Is your fan connected direct to the hood? Cuz that sounds like it'd be noisy as hell.....
hood, duct, fan, duct to exhaust port. Mount/hang the fan. (i like rubber bungee straps w/ a piece of foam behind so absorb vibrations. Eye hook on either side to hook to. Foam I use comes from local old lady yarn shop, lol.)

Ya I have my fan mounted directly on the hood...its not super loud or anything.. very slight vibration...the air its moving seems to be the problem. would mounting the fan help reduce the sound of the air flowing? I'm also using a 25ft duct( most of it it scrunched up)....cut in half?

thanks

Never any more ducting than is NEEDED to connect the different parts of your ventilation system.
All ducting as straight as possible, all bends as gentle of an angle as possible.
Always PULL the air, don't PUSH the air....

If you want it cool and quiet, connect both ends of the vent system to outside. Mine feed from under the house, and exhausts next to the dryer vent.
