Finding mothers

Grown for years now and have to say I’ve found most plants end up just quite average. I could probably buy better stuff, as I’m guessing the dealers I know are buying from people who are just running their keepers or bought clones. Rather than just popping a packet of seeds every time. At times I have thought it must be me doing something wrong lol. However there have been times where I have found plants that really stand out and piss over most other stuff. So let’s me know I ain’t doing anything wrong. Mates have been blown away with the stuff and even had other growers I’ve got friendly who’ve grown for years n they was impressed.

There has been a few breeders where in every pack is at least one plant that’s above average. Gotten to the stage where I have kind of had enough of growing for weeks to just end up with average weed most the time. Going to just run seeds from breeders where I have found above average plants in the pack. This time be sure to keep back the ones that stand out. In the hope of having just a couple mums about as opposed to running seeds all the time.

Just wondering are most here running seeds every time? When you do are most the plants average at best? on the hunt now for 3 mums and will always try make sure half my crop is one of them. As I do enjoy trying new genetics, part of the freedom of being able to grow your own.

I'm on the hunt for moms myself. I'm trying to stop buying from the dispensary and not start smoking less, I gotta find way more consistency than I've been getting so far. I see clones as one way to do that.

I grow from seeds every grow. Sometimes from known breeders and sometimes from stuff I've done myself. It's always better than the stuff you can buy at the dispensary.

Genetics play a big part but the final product is going to depend on the grower as well. Good weed wasn't fed a dozen bottles of a nutrient cocktail. Healthy plants from start to finish with minimal feeding produces good weed almost all the time. I can take some "Last Years Strain" like Master Kush and get a better result than someone paying $25 a seed for the latest fire.

This finding the perfect mother stuff is kind of overblown. These days as each new strain is supposedly better than the last latest and greatest you would always be running inferior genetics because Breeder X has this and then Breeder Y has that. The seed game is as ridiculous as the nutrient game.

Many people grow better old school 30 year old strains and have better weed than some dude growing the latest craze strain on instagram. It's a fucking joke these days. I wouldn't pay a dime for any of the polyhybrid crap out there. Half of it you can't even tell the difference as much of it is basically the same.

I live in the uk so can’t comment on dispensary weed but I have of course seen poorly grown stuff. There is so much competition here even the cash croppers as we call them tend to have decent stuff. The thing is they always have the same stuff so I guess they are just running the same clones.

I am not looking for a mother just because it’s the latest hype. I totally agree with you, guess it is just the market being the way it is. everyone trying to market something and make it the latest hype. Then breeders rushing to bring out their fem version of it and naming it something similar or even the same name.
I imagine a lot of the time people are just crossing the same strain rather than the actual pheno that stood out. Then just sticking the name in the description to have people thinking they are getting a chance to see the sample everyone’s hyped up.

I have been guilty of chasing the hype at times and stuff that looks good on social media. Lesson learnt though and agree with you again, I would actually rather run some old school stuff. In fact I plan on running an old strain next which is years old and still around for good reason. Them is another strain I grew and had an amazing pheno that I’m gonna hunt for again. I have seen others grow from seed and end up with plants that look and sound very similar so hopefully it isn’t to hard to find again.

Buy the right pack of seeds from a reputable breeder. Find the star phenos. Preserve the mom's for consistent clones of that pheno. Get bored of it? Try another run of something different. To me thats the fun in pheno hunts for some good smoke.
yeah this is gonna be how I do things going forward. Got enough room to keep 3 mums. Have found more keepers than that over the years. Like you say though when bored can always pop a pack of seeds from breeders who’s stuff has shown keepers in the past. Bodhi is a breeder for me for example where every strain I’ve tried I’ve found least one stand out plant in every pack. Even go as far to say had a whole pack where everything was above average and just came down to personal taste.

I'm planning a trip over Americas to look for landraces. Jamaica, Paraguay, Brazil.
That's will be my contribution. Can't let the real shit dies. I'm stunned, after just six years from my last seed bought, how hard is to find strains from that time. But they're out there.
If you're looking for a mom, using females, man, not a way to go.

I don't know. Sometimes I pass over entire strains, but other times I find that one plant that is begging to remain in this world. It might be a special pheno, or it might just flourish more than the rest in the environment I've created. Either way it feels like fate.

I've spent this year hunting for a new moms. I found some a few grows ago, but tragically killed the cuts and couldn't reveg the plants. My last grow was half clones from an old OG Kush mother and half leftover seeds, and I ended up throwing the mother into flower. I wasn't thrilled with any of the phenos from the seeds, so I didn't bother. I have a several strains that I will use for two more grows after this current one, and then I'm going back to running clones. Occasionally I'll toss some seeds into the mix just for variety, but I prefer a long term relationship with a mother.

Like that OLD fake butter commercial says... it's not nice to fool with mother nature, and it isn't. Yeah, for me the old stuff is still better than any of the newer stuff. Like the Afghani cut I got from my cousin who got it from the Brotherhood of Eternal Love (the John Griggs cut) in the early 70(s), that gal cannot be found anywhere today. And believe me, every Afghani cut or seed I have grown from other breeders cannot compare to the (John Griggs cut). And it goes the same way for so many other strains. In fact a lot of crosses made today will tell you that they are a cross of THIS and THAT, but most times the THIS or THAT, or even both of the THIS / THAT aren't even a cut from the original MOM!

I’m not just looking for a mother that’s the latest hype. I would say it’s fairly rare but have found stuff I would happily keep and regret not doing so. It’s just the obsession of trying new strains which is part of the fun for me. Given how most stuff doesn’t impress me much though I’m gonna be more selective in what I bother with. Plus run whole packs as recently I just accept cuts from a friend who simply grabs as many cuts as possible from the first plant that shows its sex. Better to run a whole pack and decide for myself what I like, rather than tent full of cuts that haven’t even been looked at before.

Seeds I am popping next are a back cross of an old strain and have plenty of good reviews online plus I know the clone so can find what I feel is the closest to the original and keep that. Then next time round will be going to breeders I’ve run before and found stand out phenos. Look to get about 3 mums and that’ll do me.

If you can find it dinafem critical+ up to now (9years) I’ve found about 4 different phenos in loads of seeds.

dinafem white Siberian - not as much time spent with this Strain but 2 plants last time where the same pheno and I have another 2 now That 1 is the same pheno I found last time and 1 is different.

I run through a ton of plants before I find my winner. Then I keep.her clone more desired mothers from her and put them in 15 to 25 gallon pots in my custom momma blend and let them rock out. Occasionally ill rotate them out. Do some root pruning my hand and add fresh soil. Generally every 6-8 months.

I always run seeds, as many plants as I have room for, making sure each one is flowered to full maturity. I cut clones right before I switch to 12/12. There’s usually one that will stand out in a pack, this one I’ll keep, and start another pack. Repeat. If you’re not finding what you want, do some reading and find a different breeder

I think an issue has been I have got to the stage where I was happy to just get clones and thought it was saving me time. A friend would pop regs and then just strip a female for clones. Then would run that and so wasn’t getting to really see what was in the whole pack of seeds to select the best. Basically limited to one pheno and have to hope it’s good. Least running a whole pack is more of a chance of finding something good. So gonna go back to that and like I say anything good will be kept.

Agree thought it was just me! Most seeds are counterfeit that lve aquired in past. Finding good genetics is like playing russian roullette. They are out there, good luck finding yours. I need to take cuts before flower, and stop buying crap sedds too. Best of luck, your not alone.

Veg each one and when it’s time to flower them take a cut from each one and keep them under some low level CFL’s until you know which to keep from your flower room run.

yeah gonna be doing this and only running seeds from breeders I have found high percentage of decent plants from in the past when searching. Days of just popping seeds constantly are over for me, had enough.
