first bubbleponic grow

does anybody know how close i can get a 400 watt mh to a plant?
actually this question is full of a innumerable amount of variables... first thing is, is it sealed reflector, a sealed and vented reflector, or just an open/cheap reflector..

In my closet grow, the 400w HPS(which generates more heat the MH, by maybe 10-20%) was simply to much heat... I even had above its effective distance (with a cheap reflector) and it still rose temps to 95 degrees and stress the plants A LOT. I replaced with a lot of CFLs...

On the other hand, in my new grow room ( i never wanna post pics of it) i have that light growing soil plants as fast as my bubbleponics has grown...

I realized it is amount temp, but ALSO the amount of open air.... when you a lamp that emits alot of heat but has plenty of free flowing air(which my new room has) then the light emits the same heat but can be dispersed easier..

They opposite can be said about closet grows... there is now where that heat can go, unless the reflector is sealed, vented, and proberly "fanned"(exhaust fan)

so basically my point is that i can't give you an exact answer... but based on what i have seen, if you in a large space(8'x8'), you can put a 1000w HPS as close as 6inches away from the tip but aslong as you got a a lot of CFM blowing threw a vented and sealed reflector...

its a 3x4x10 closet and have a small fan that i riged and put it in the vent above the door blowing into my room but it stays like 87 in there. is that temp ok? just making sure she gets all the kight she needs.

I know man, you never wanna sacrifice light, but where is temp recorded..

temps directly under the light(like the plants are) can be completely different than the temp recorded in the room...

btw, yes 87 does stunt growth by a very small amount...not really anything to "freak out" about but something you should correct....

72-82 is perfect, Im sure you know
72-82 is perfect

thermometer sits next to plant. yea i know i try and circulate my rooms air but somedays r better then other with work and everything. Plus small areas suck. should i be checking room temp r temp under light?

temp under light about an inch above the tip of plant...

yah indoor temps depend a lot on if the sun is out or not...

look, during this pass summer, i ran an a/c line straight from the chamber(I am a contractor) straight into my closet... this still did not get rid of the heat...

if you want good temps... get a good exhaust system hooked up while having good temp air being blown in... or go to CFLs like i did

How close the light?

Do the hand test. Put it as close as you can, AFTER they are over 6 inches tall, but lay your hand over the top of the plant and put the light as close as you can without it burning your hand.

the yellow and green spots. they appeared on more of my leaves didnt know if it was something to worry bout? are those normal for it to have those?

Not a problem unless it moves up in a hurry. Death from the bottom is normal as long as it not on a whole node all at once. Lighting has something to do with it along with a little root reaction to things like an extra dose of ph down or nute concentration when you add it and sometime just because.

Worse it could me is nute burn and you fix that by draining a gallon and adding a gallon of ph's water only. Sort of back it down. Also remember that just because those leaves have spots doesn't mean they are not functioning. I've had some nute burned leaves hang on for the whole grow.

Is the plant drinking? Does the water and roots smell fresh?

If they are drinking they are fine but I can't see pictures. This site has a problem the last couple of days. On roots I go by smell. If it smells fresh it's fine.

yeah website has been all F%$#&* up. How do u go by smell? do they just smell like the rez water or is it a diff smell? what do they smell like when there bad?
