Fungas Gnats - Desperate Acts

So on my last grow I noticed what looked like nute burn towards the end of the flower cycle. I also noticed a bunch of gnats that were flying around the room... I didn't put 2 and 2 together until it was to late.

I ended having a decent harvest but my yield and quality suffered because of the gnats. The actually lay the eggs inside your medium the larvae then eat the roots and root hairs (this is what I believe causes the nute burn look) <---- I have no scientific data showing this, it is just my assumption.

Since my last grow I cleaned everything lit off 2 bug bombs with a couple of weeks in between ( I even used two brands). I spray the veg girls with azamax about once a week to build up a nice coating before flowering. I then light off a Dr. Doom bug bomb right before flipping 12/12. Basically I took some steps in preventative maintenance. ***I am on day 21 of 70 ish***

Unfortunately when I made my first aero unit I drilled out the net pot holes a little to big. Meaning the are 1/16" smaller than the net pots (which turns out isn't near enough. I like 1/4" now). Three of the net pots have fallen through the lid exposing the root chamber to a little bit of lit, air and warmth (gnat heaven).

Desperate Times and Desperate Measures:

Here is my band-aid fix.

Went to homedepot got some expanding foam. Wadded up some Tyvek and stuffed it into the exposed gaps... Then emptied the can in between light protector and lid holding plants. Also, I setup a few sticky traps around the garden and house. (We are going to war)

I am hoping that this doesn't randomly kill my plants but I am pretty certain that they will be fine. I didn't water for about an hour to let the foam harden up. Then did my water change as normal and the plants looked fine when I went to Sleep.

Has anyone else done something like this? have any better remedies? Done something more desperate?

gnats are easy as shit to kill. if you have great white or tarantula water in a good dose. anything with BTi will kill em

I am not sure what any of that is. Are you talking about this stuff? I am in aeroponics/ hydro BTW. And what is BTi?

yea thats the shit. make sure your dealing with gnats cause might be a dif critter...

Amonia solution (10%), a teaspoon per litre. Water with that and they' stop the egging in your soil. As for the flyers, find a box about 15x15cm and fill it half full with coke. Then add a couple of drops of soap (something that solves fat) and stir carefully. Put that in the room and the flyers are gone in a few days.

Also, nothing of this will harm your plants at all AND its cheap as hell

Just a small update. I seem to be rid of the gnats in the flower tent. But I am still seeing signs of them in the Veg room.

I ended getting some Orca:



Will let you guys know what happens in the next couple weeks. The only issue is that I am in Aeroponics and about 90% sure that the microbes will not survive in this environment. So we shall see.

Also, what I means by signs... The new growth is disfigured and looks burnt. (I know that it isn't nute burn because the other plants looks great. And the PPM's aren't that high)

I will get some pictures of what I am talking about tonight.

Coulda saved $30 by buying pond enzymes instead for future reference. Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis will rid you of fungis gnats. It can be found in products such as "Mosquito Bits." This and a systematic like SNS209 will keep them at bay permanently.
Edit: You could just skip the sns209 and only use the bti. I use the sns 209 my whole grow though and it keeps them from ever coming around.

If they don't turn around in a couple of days I will go get the pond enzyme. Any recommendations on brand?

How will they get their protein?

If the Orca doesn't show any help then I will be dousing them with the WDG.

Damn man, you're strugglin over there I feel bad. First time I had them bad they tore apart my hair roots anywhere near the surface and it killed my plants water and nute intake

Well I killed them off in the flower room. The expanding foam pretty blocked all entrances.

But I am still dealing with them in the veg room. Seeing signs of them. Plant leaves looking burned and rounded. Just not growing properly. The other plants in the same setup are doing fine. So it looks to be 2 of the veg plants.
