You don't "germinate vs dropping in soil"

Germination happens in soil, paper towels, rockwool, rapid rooters, cups of water, etc. If it does not happen, you have no plant.

Please at least check out the wikipedia entry "germination"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germination

I'm sure you meant "How many germinate using other methods besides directly in soil" but germination should be well understood by anyone hoping to become a successful grower. Well enough that they wouldn't confuse the process of germination with the method of germination.

I do not.
Either in soil in the Solo cup, or in the little 6 pack things that veggies come in from the nursery, and they come up within 3 to 5 days max.

I bow down to your obstinate insecurity.

Glad to know that your seeds don't germinate. You just put them in soil.

And obviously you don't have to read anything.

good luck

I used a 8 oz glass cup with soil to keep moisture when I first started to germ but once I started growing top shelf mary I use the paper towel and sandwich bag method. I like to get a 1 inch sprout before I plant. I tried planting a qtr inch germ or less and it turned brown and never kept up.

for soil use its not really necessary since technically by putting your seed in soil and watering it is...well germinating! one plus of germinating before planting would be to know which seeds pop and which dont. if you plant a seed in soil and water it and it doesnt pop your left with a wet pot of soil not being used and you wont know for a week or so. germinating is mainly used in hydro setups where they arent planting into a thick soil medium. a lot of hydro systems would allow your seed to fall through into the rez without roots holding it in place.

For me out of over 100 fem seeds only three have hermed. Two were my fault(I assume)early on as a novice when I didn't have my main flower room light proof, the last was a Grapefruit Krush and it was the only plant in veg out of six that refused to show sex before 12/12 flip, about 1 week into 12/12 it clearly showed the typical clusters of pollen sacs beginning at the nodes.
I chose fem over regular because with regular I may only get zero females out of ten for all I know, with fem I know I will be getting female with a possibility of a herm, most of which come from bad environments. There can be bad genetics now and then but I feel a weekly inspection for herms from week 1 to week 4 of flower is well worth the effort and extra seed cost rather then get stuck with 50% or less females using regulars which is usually the case.

i am not sure of the number of seed plants i have taken to full maturity most likely well over 1000, i do tend to run clones mostly but do run some
seeds along side on each grow, i have never had 100% male from 10 seeds as you stated was possible, i guess its possible, but you would be the most unlucky guy in the world lol
if female seeds work for you that is great, i have nothing against them i do think they are overpriced, but then the regular seeds are not cheap either
many of the breeders and strains i am interested in do not have fem versions, some breeders are against the fem thing, each to their own
i feel safer using regs and they cost less it is more likely a female is true from regs and is not going to give you a nasty surprise 4 weeks down the line
i have kept some fem plants in the past without problems, so i would never rule them out but would always rather run regs
i have no problems removing males during preflower and still filling all the grow space with the remaining females

peace :)

For me, germinated seeds sprout twice as fast. If you don't plant your germinated seed root up it will take longer to sprout than a soil seed though, which may be why some people had the faster results in soil

yea, they root should go up becuase they unfold and grow..unless the root is really long..youll see that it should go down. theyd be unfolded already

The facts are a person can grow all the mj they'd ever want with one good seed:) I always use paper towel a saucer and stick the hole thing in a zip lock. Start checking it airating, water and tip off extra water after the third day. Some seeds will sprout earlier than others. The reason I use the ziplock is because I can't be there all the time and I can't risk them going dry. Contrary to the OP I plant my sprouts in rockwool and place them into the cloning bin. Some seedlings will benefit by helping them shed their shell and seed sack after they have broken through the surface of the medium.

I've read alot of you all germinate your seeds before soil, what is the benefit of that?

I seed drop only and have 99.9% success , am i missing something by not germinating?
I hate to be that guy, but technically either way you are germinating. Germinating is making the seed leave dormancy and start to grow. The radicle shoots down and the cotyledons raise up. So the real question is: Germinating outside of soil vs in soil.

Bb your a dozen posts late to be "that" guy.

Personally i go with reg seeds in about 2 inch of seed starter mix. Oversoak just a bit the first time and leave it someplace warmish. Come back in 3-5 days and plant... Take a clone from each female the day it shows its pistols and dont worry about seeds again untill i want to add new genetics

TL;DR.

simplest solution is to use peat pots. Jiffy is a solid brand. Hydrate it, drop the seed in, and cover with a dome, tupperware, etc. and set it under a cfl.
OSH sells some kinda peat pots that sucks. try to get jiffypots
Don't need "hydro" stuff

result of paper towel. a vet told me that light and air are bad for taproot, so it should be in the dark, like under the soil until the green pigments are setup..said the tip could have died when transfering from paper towel to soil. i hope it grows comeon baby its a fem i paid a good amount for 2013-02-15_12-46-39_207.jpg
