Germinating vs. Dropping Seed In Soil

I've read alot of you all germinate your seeds OUTSIDE of soil, what is the benefit of that?

I seed drop only {germinating mine IN the soil} and have pretty darn good success , am i missing something by not germinating OUTSIDE of soil..?

On average how long does it take for your seeds to sprout? And in answer to your question I have no idea just the way I've always done it.

sounds like you are missing out on the wonderful world that is Hydroponics :)

i have germinated many seeds over the years all outside soil, my success rate is good but it is lower than 99.9% .. seems your method has the advantage

either you have not grown that many seeds. or you are an expert or perhaps i should plant my seeds in dirt before i transfer them to Hydro and achieve 99.9% success like yourself
food for thought

you must share your secrets i envy your success rate

peace :)

haahaa I love sarcasum evil Mr. Spock haa classic responce
well you can question my 99.9% success, but in a figure of speech i'm betting you understand my statement . so to answer one question, most times it's 3 days 4 at most to pop out, then it holds there with it's mini solar panels out a couple daZes and then starts to reach up to the bulbs of life.

so, i thought i should ask is all, thanks

I drop straight into Root Shooters, rockwool cubes and directly into seedling mix in 4" planters. About the same success rate as you. The paper towels give no benefit. Neither does dunking them in water.

drop in soil! i just did a sowed in soil. in soil, they showed me their faces in 3 days.

no sign of paper towel seed. i put it in the soil right when it cracked open, so it wasnt wasting energy making a taproot into paper towel.

yeh whatever works for you m8.. i always sprout more seeds than i need, then i pick the better looking ones and kill off the not so good looking

alot of folk here put seeds in a glass of water and wait for them to float or sink, lol i have never tried that
others swear by using paper towels to germinate , i have always used rockwool each to thier own
peace :)

There nothing more than seed viability tests. I've read that fresh seed have a very high success rate, and as time goes by and the seed ages that success rate drop some. I'm unsure at what seed age this happens. Environment plays a big part, where you keep your seeds. I only buy seeds, and sow to soil. Almost all of them sprout. But I don't keep seeds longer than 6 months.

They will last many years if you just keep them in the fridge
no need to discard them after 6 months
but i do agree fresh is better :)

nice, so you are talking normal seeds and not femm seeds then? some of them new seeds are like 13$ or more apiece. i use mostly femm seeds. how is your male female ratio? before i use these new ones and just grew bag seeds i have a pretty good ratio (luck i'm sure) of like 70% or so

I get that 99.9% is an expression, but if it were that high for me I wouldn't do the Tupperware. I do it for the simple reason that I can choose the seeds that I sow. And have a 0% "failure to pop" rate .... Certainty, I don't like guesswork

gotCha, i choose the seeds by buying them i guess haaa i drop them in the container there going to live there lives in so there's never a transplant, kinda wierdly cool to see a 5 day old sprout in the middle of a 10 gallon bucket

After around 100 or more seeds I'm near 100% success using my paper towel method so I guess it's all about enjoying another stage of growing and how you prefer to start a seed, nothing more.

yeh i grow reg seeds most of the time, the odd fem freebie perhaps
the seeds do cost lots i agree, but if the end result is a good keeper plant it is worth it
i do tend to avoid the most expensive strains, i did give in recently with fire alien kush from OG raskal i have not started them yet
the male female ratio is about even from 10 reg seeds 4 healthy females would be ok, although on my last run, i got 7 females from 10 blues reg seeds

i do not have any real issue with fem seeds, when i started growing there wasn't any fem seeds unless you grew out your own s1s
i guess i just stick with what i know, i maybe wrong but i feel that when you grow with reg seeds you can trust your females more to not show hemi signs in the middle of flower
i do not think i have ever seen a reg seed plant turn hemi during its middle growth, if it is hemi with reg seeds it shows it when flowering starts, i have had a few fem seeds that seemed fine until week 4 of flower
then they showed lots of male flowers, i would rather use reg seeds so when i identify a female during pre-flower i feel i can trust it, not so sure with fems i always have my eye on them lol

peace :)

For me out of over 100 fem seeds only three have hermed. Two were my fault(I assume)early on as a novice when I didn't have my main flower room light proof, the last was a Grapefruit Krush and it was the only plant in veg out of six that refused to show sex before 12/12 flip, about 1 week into 12/12 it clearly showed the typical clusters of pollen sacs beginning at the nodes.
I chose fem over regular because with regular I may only get zero females out of ten for all I know, with fem I know I will be getting female with a possibility of a herm, most of which come from bad environments. There can be bad genetics now and then but I feel a weekly inspection for herms from week 1 to week 4 of flower is well worth the effort and extra seed cost rather then get stuck with 50% or less females using regulars which is usually the case.
