Good idea? what do you think?

Hey everyone. I have an idea and wanted to throw it by people who are more experienced and ‘in-the-know’ then I am. I recently started researching High Output T5 Fluorescents.

Lets say you have two 4 foot fluorescent lights giving roughly 5,000 lumens ea. = 10,000 lumens total. Now lets say you train your plant to grow horizontal, by using tie downs, strings, weights what ever. See what I’m getting at? When I see examples of people using T5’s their plants are growing regular (vertical) but the penetration of these lights aren’t good at all. So if you plant is 3-4 feet tall, and growing vertical you can actually maximize those 10,000 lumens (per plant).

I’ve read on a few boards that outside at sea level the sun averages about 10,000 lumens per square foot. Now I know that my idea above isn’t in a square foot area. However this idea on paper seems to be VERY efficient. Or am I forgetting to factor in something?

Here’s my actually question I guess:
If one plant receives:
~10,000 Lumens of 3000K during flowering and
~10,000 Lumens of 6500K during vegetative
Growing vertically under a T5 light (literally directly above the plant)
Wouldn’t it grow fat delicious nugs all over?
Is this a good idea?
I would like to hear any thoughts and/or suggestions. Any and all are greatly
appreciated.
and please i dont want this to get into an HID, MH, Fluorescent light debate either. thanks.

WOW so you want to have fun good.

I'm not real sure what you mean so if you get an unexpected answer from me it's truely a mistake.

I think I would change the orientation of the lights instead of the plants if you have the room.

Most people here that use those type of lights have changed to cfl's and put them in a spot hood and aim them. The one's that do that love it.

I hope this helps and welcome to rollitup

P.S. do you have any G13

"When I see examples of people using T5’s their plants are growing regular (horizontal)". do u mean the lights horizontal? or the growth of the plant? search the forum for "horizontal plant".. theres a guy who grew his plant as flat as possible

haha yes, i wanna have lotsa fun! lol. when I was thinking about this... changing the orientation of the lights never even crossed my mind. I like it! kudos to you. i think room can be made for it. but in my mind (if successful) picture plants growing vertical under lights on shelves all the way up to the ceiling. rows and rows lol. looks cool in my mind. space saving in my opinion. maximize horizontal room space for vertical growth. CFL's are definetly a thought i figured i was going to throw one per plant just cause. lol i mean why not. but i wanted to focus my experiment with T5 just because I cant find alot of grow journals with them. I hear about tight nodes and all this i think it'd be cool. but my focus isn't on cool, dont get me wrong i want what everyone wants. fat potent nugs. but I dont want to use HID,MH, etc. I wanna be extreemly creative. oh and I dont have G13 but i have some seeds (that ill be using for this experiement) that have G13 present :).

I ment the plant grows sideways with the main stem growing perpendicular with the light. Do you know of people growing with the lights hanging horizontal?

i tried looking on this sites forums and others too maybe i missed it. i would be very interested if anyone knew of a grow journal like this.

thank you very much for the link. ill be reading it later tonight, i cant wait. I've seen alot of your posts, alot of usefull knowlege you have.

thnx to everyone who is expressing interest in this topic. I think it's an interesting concept and i guess thats what counts right? lol. keep replying yout thoughts and ideas its all greatly apprechiated. If interest keeps up, once i finally plan out the exact way i want to grow I may have a grow journal on this site... we'll see though.

Oh and i wanted to add that I've considered Screen of Green (i think this came up on another site where i posted this same idea for feedback) I like the idea of SCROG but how much extra time is put into that? training? just forcing a bend and letting it stretch that way tied down (or somthing) seems like it'd be easier/faster right? I dunno Ive never done anything like this before lemme know what you guys think.

bear in mind that 'vertical' means up/down. 'horizontal' means sideways. plants normally grow vertically...

haha your absolutly right. that's my mistake, but luckily ya'll know what i ment. lol.

P.S. I edited my original post and fixed the error. thnx morp

Mr I Can Do That For Half
Growing horizontal is a tried and true way some peopl use with limited height. You can lst the plant and slowly train it and tie it down. Its a lot more work but can be benfitial. There was a comment about someone saying people who use T5 lights switch to cfl...ummm I have never heard of this and would have to question the persons intelligence to switch from the new T-5 tubes to a cfl light in a pan reflector.Youd loose coverage and lumnes and all around decrease the plants yield by dumping T-5s for a cfl so dont do that.CFLs may replace T-8 or T12 lights but not T-5s good luck

t-5's have the highest lumen output per watt then any other flourescent light, so yea switching to cfls would be like backtracking.

i think lsting would be a good idea for you since cfl lights dont have the intensity to penetrate down through a deep canopy.

Thnx guys. So here is what I'm thinking. I think I want to try SCROG under the 54W T5. those are almost 4 feet long, so I can have atleast a minimum of 3 scrog growing under them, almost 4 but i dont think ill push that.

all i know is that i would preffer not to do soil. and I want to have each bucket have its own screen so i can move them for whatever reason. any suggestions on what method i should use?
