With the outdoor season almost over it time to start setup my first indoor grow. I will be growing in soil and will be starting from seed. I have been buying things during the past couple months, here are a few things I have so far:

Grow Tents-
  1. GrowMedics Pentflex Fabric 36x20x62 -ebay $51 New
  2. Sun Hut XL 54x54x84 -craigslist $70 NIB!
Lighting-
  1. Jump Start 2' HO T5 Grow Light System -Amazon $50 New
  2. 150w HPS Sun Systems -ebay $50 used
  3. 400w HPS Future-Brite Digital Ballast w/Hortilux bulb -craigslist $100 used
  4. 600w HPS/MH Future-Brite Dig. Ballast w/ Hortilux bulb -craigslist $175 used
I need to buy a 6" exhaust fan/carbon filter. I would like to know what is a good buy and how many cfm will be required? What other essentials do I need? Also, if you had the tents and lights above, how would you set it all up? Buying another tent is also an option if I was to do a Mother/Clone, Veg. and Flower room. What would you do??? Thanks!

I would recommend a water and soil ph meter and a hand held microscope as essentials...
Thanks, I have alot of these these little things, sorry my post was kinda vauge. I basically needed to know how many plants would you put in a 4x4 and w/ the lighting I have which light(s) would you use? And in the smaller tent, how would you set that up?

Declectic-thanks for the link! + rep!

assuming you're growing in soil?

Here is another good link (under the resources section): http://www.sunlightsupply.com/t-faq.aspx
- 15. How big of an area will my light cover?
The size of the garden area will determine the wattage you need. If we assume that the plants will get no sunlight, a 1000 watt light will cover about 7 x 7 feet of growing area. A 600 watt will cover 6 x 6 feet, a 400 watt will cover 4 x 4 feet, and a 250 watt will cover 3 x 3 feet. These sized areas would be considered the “Primary Growing” areas. These lights will light-up larger areas, but plants placed outside of the Primary Growing area, will stretch and bend toward the light; a phenomenon called phototropism. Keep these areas of coverage in mind when using multiple fixtures. The best results occur when the areas of coverage overlap.

I've currently got 5 in my tent… I think I could safely do 9? but i know for sure if i had 6 they would all be under the 'primary growing' areas.

I would have to disagree with those light footprints. A 1000w is good for 5x5 feet as a rule of thumb and a 600w is good for 4x4 foot area. In my 5x5 tent I use 1000w and it is a perfect match, there is just more heat to deal with so good ventilation is key. So for your size i would recomend a 600w light.
The more light you can get in an area will give you better quality and yield.

As far as plant numbers that is completly up to you and your style of growing. Soil or Hydro? You could go short veg times and lots of plants in a sea of green style or veg for a longer time with fewer plants. I usually grow soil, 4-6 plants under my 1000w. With a veg period of around 5 weeks and 5 gallon pots i typically pull around a pound and a half depending on strains.

OK, I'm gonna use the 600. I need a fan but need to know what the min. cfm should be. I will have a speed control also, so I can run the fan at a lower speed to limit the noise. Is there a formula to figure this out or do you just try to regulate the temps inside?
