How important is a ventellation system anyway?

i have a 5x3 grow closet, and a 400 watt hps system from HTG supply. Im just wondering if i need a ventellation system? would it be beneficial to simply leave the closet in my apartment open? would it work if i put a fan inside the closet?

also wondering about a humidifier? would that make it alot more pleasant for the plants in there? you know not so dry

the main thing that i want to know is if im needing a big old shiny setup with the giant tubes and stuff.

its just a standard sized coat closet

Always good for plants if good ventilation but I went through a 2 year patch of leaving a cupboard open with two fans as I thought I was only staying a few months so didnt want to cut up the wall/door or anything. My humidity was a bucket of water and a fan when really hot and dry but too much moisture and you will get the dreaded bud rot.

Anyway good ventilation is important for the ladies but if really stuck you could manage (although heat could be an issue for you)

i just completed my 1st grow in soil. (northern lights)

my next grow, and grows from here on out are going to be hydro. does that effect anything?

are plants in hydro more tolerable to heat?

my soil plants did get a bit dry at times.

and does a bucket of water really make a difference in a hot closet?

Fresh air is your friend!!!! Trust me. Fresh cool air will help with pest, temps, air quality, circulation, and more constant co2 in the room.

Ok I have a question for you hotwheelszac did you order the light on line and if so how long did it take to get it?
I'm still waiting on my stuff.

I would not worry about raising the humidity as much as getting rid of it. During veg. stage its ok at 60% and lower but at flowering the most should be 45% so you dont have a chance of bud rot.

so its okay to have the closet door open? my light is like where the bar would be to hang clothes. i didnt know if that would waste the light or not?

K.1st proper ventilation is a must, for 1 fresh air and 2 odor control (u did say an apartment).
2nd wouldn't worry bout a humidification @ this point seeing how u r gonna hydro however a dehumidifier is great 4 budding. But if u cant do ventilation properly, then b sure to use a few good fans for air flow.

its already pretty dehumified in there, it gets pretty hot.

now how should i have these fan(s)? inside the closet with the door closed? inside with the door open? cracked?

or the fan outside with the door cracked blowing air inside?

im lost

I ordered mine on the 11th< i know I know just wait and it will be here but I cant wait I got plants waiting on that light!!!!!
Other than that you canhave the door open as a temp solution to the venting problem but at some point you might want to add some type of fan and another thing to keep in mind is will someone see it if it is open? Dont let people see and dont tell anyone if you do you might as well call the cops and tell them you are a pot head growing in a closet...lol
Just be carful
But ya, I want my light... lol

ventilation is a must. musky air that has no where to go is never a good time. Humidity goes through the roof, mold comes along, bugs love it, Like others have said if you can not afford a vent system or it just works out that you can not have one. Just go crazy on your fans and try to have an intake hole for fresh air.

Hope this helps!

I would say to buy a 4" vortex fan. That will exhaust a lot of hot and stale air. I used a 4" fan in a closet once and it was more than enough.

Also add some small wall mounted fans if you can

You are making a big mistake not scrubbing the air, considering you live around others (apartment).

400watts and no ventilation....you'll gonna need more than just an open closet door.

You need an inline fan with a carbon filter, unless you are cool with your entire place smelling and everyone and their dog knowing whats going on inside just by walking by your front door.

4'' is perfect for your size of setup and fan, with a little filter and assuming a little ducting will be used, your 400 watter will be easily cooled with roughly a 150cfm fan.

So fan, filter, and from the looks of it a little panda film and aluminum tape and you are on your way to having a stink free, light proof closet.

Hey there hot wheelszac, ya i know it will be here just I want it now!!!! Sorry Ive been away could not post anything but any how, I thinnk that 4" fan will be too much for you. If you want to spent the money (like130 for fan and filter) then go for it but you only have like 56 cubic feet of room in that closet so it you got a 4'' vortex fan like spandy was saying then it would be over kill!!!! I say this because that fan is rated at 170 cfm (thats cubic feet per minute) and thats 15 times what you need. My reason bhind saying this is you need to replace the air in the room every 5 minutes which for you is only 11-12 cfm so it you want my opinion i would say det a duct inline fan in fact I shoped around for you and here is the link> http://htgsupply.com/viewproduct.asp?productID=46434 Its rated at 80 cfm and even though its still more than you need it only $20.

Now spandy also mentioned about the smell and yes there will be smell but not that munch untill you start budding it. So untill you need it you dont need to spend the money. Also you could get a $50 ozone genorator to get rid of the smell. But once agian you dont need it untill you start 12/12 cycle. So.... thats my opinion I just thought you might want to save some money. Also I dont know if any one told you this but make sure (for what ever fan you decide to get) to vent the room from the top of the closet, not the bottom this way it takes out the hot air.

If you have a bigger growing room I would agree with spandy but not for that small of a closet. Let me know what you think.

i think i am going to get that duct fan and also mount a smaller osc fan on my growroom wall.

i hope i get this right, this is pretty much the thing that i dont know about growing the most.
